New York Times Says Fashion Photos Can Be Altered

Some drama occurred recently when Deborah Needleman, editor of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, said she considered adding some fat to a cover model she thought was too thin. Naturally some people were outraged, because they apparently have never picked up a magazine. Margaret Sullivan, the Times’ public editor, followed up on the situation, and found that the Times holds fashion photos to a different standard than news photos.

Michele McNally, the Times’ assistant managing editor for photography, explained, “Fashion is fantasy. Readers understand this. It’s totally manipulated, with everything done for aesthetics.” Philip Corbett, associate managing editor for standards, added, “This is a different genre of photography [than news]. It has different goals, different tools and techniques, and there is a different expectation on the part of the reader.”

In other words: Don’t be an idiot. Of course fashion photos are altered. If you’re upset by this, consider taking photos meant to sell material goods a little less seriously.

WWD is reporting that Jesse Ashlock is joining the T: The New York Times Style Magazine staff as online director. Ashlock comes to the magazine from Details, where he served as as deputy editor.

Prior to his time at Details, Ashlock was the editor of I.D., which folded in 2009.

Ashlock’s work has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, BusinessWeek, and Fast Company.

Deborah Needleman is Sorry There’s So Many White People in T

The first T: The New York Times Style Magazine under the guidance of Deborah Needleman hit newsstands this past Sunday. While the new T was packed with content and ads (the issue was so massive we considered doing bicep curls with it), something else stuck out to readers: The models featured were pretty much all white.

To her credit, Needleman realized and regretted the overwhelming whiteness found within T’s pages. In a response to the Times’ public editor, she pledged to correct the discrepancy going forward:

Kate Lanphear Joins T: The New York Times Style Magazine

Deborah Needleman continues to reshape T: The New York Times Magazine. Her latest hire is Kate Lanphear, who has been named the magazine’s new style director.

T’s Twitter account confirmed the news of Lanphear’s arrival via a tweet from fashion journalist Jim Shi. ”Kate Lanphear has joined T: The New York Times Style Magazine as style director,” tweeted Shi. “She’ll be at the upcoming women’s shows with Team T.”

Lanphear was most recently with Elle, where she also served as style director since 2008.

Joe McKenna is coming aboard T: The New York Times Style Magazine as its fashion editor at large. According to WWD, McKenna will be based in London where he lives, but work on several spreads per year.

McKenna is a veteran of the fashion world, getting his start in 1986. His work has been featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair, W and more.

It is expected that McKenna will have a large role in T’s February issue, which will be the first under Deborah Needleman.

Staffers Follow Deborah Needleman to T

With Deborah Needleman just starting to get comfortable as the new editor of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, WWD reports that staffers from WSJ. are following her there. WSJ.’s fashion features director Whitney Vargas and creative director Patrick Li are both expected to join the staff of T soon, with more to follow.

Vargas has been with WSJ. since 2010. She had previously served as Elle’s senior fashion news editor.

Li resigned from WSJ. last week. He had been with the magazine since last May. He was the founder of the design firm Li Inc., and has worked with Vogue China, Jason Wu, Rodarte and more.

Everyone Wants Deborah Needleman

Deborah Needleman is in high demand, and so the rumors about her leaving WSJ. for T: The New York Times Style Magazine will not end until we hear something official. WWD reports that Needleman is still expected to accept the job at T, but a source at the Journal said that on Tuesday, the paper’s managing editor — Robert Thomson — met with her and gave a last ditch pitch to keep her. Additionally, there is gossip swirling that Hearst offered Needleman a job.

It all makes us wonder: Who are these people who keep spreading rumors about their coworkers?

“Ohhhh snap, Stacey was just eating at her desk! And it was leftover Tuna Helper, so she’s definitely gone. I can’t wait to tell someone about my assumption!”

What an odd life. Of course then we have to write about it, so…

The rumors of Deborah Needleman leaving WSJ. to take over T: The New York Times Style Magazine just won’t quit.

Despite Needleman denying the claim that she had already taken the job at the Times, several sources have told WWD that not only is she going, she’s taking several WSJ. editors with her.

Either people are extremely bored and just making things up, or Needleman is indeed headed to the Times, and we’ll all have to act surprised when she does. Can’t wait!

Deborah Needleman is being wooed by the New York Times. According to WWD, the Times has offered her the editor-in-chief spot at T: The New York Times Style Magazine. Needleman has been the editor of WSJ. since 2010.

Needleman denied that she had accepted the job and a Times spokesperson told WWD, “We have nothing to announce and can’t comment on the rumor.” In other words, Needleman will be the editor of T in about three weeks.

If she accepts, Needleman would succeed Sally Singer, who abruptly left T at the end of August.

Sally Singer Departs T: The New York Times Style Magazine

Sally Singer is leaving T: The New York Times Style Magazine. Singer was brought on as editor-in-chief of T in 2010, after a long run at Vogue.

“Sally’s contributions are clear to anyone who’s read the magazine during her tenure,” said Jill Abramson, executive editor of the Times, in a statement, “Gorgeous visuals, interesting stories and enterprising features — both in print and online — have been hallmarks of her stewardship. We wish her every success.”

WWD reports that there are mixed explanations regarding Singer’s departure, with some claiming she was forced out and some saying she decided to leave on her own.

A Slump at The New York Times Style Mag

T, The New York Times’ Style Magazine, is going through quite the rough patch. According to WWD, the title has seen ad pages drop in five out of its seven issues so far this year. Overall, T’s ad pages are down four percent, and therefore the “when will Sally Singer get canned” rumors are picking up steam.

Singer has been the Editor-in-Chief of T since 2010, and has been under scrutiny during almost all of her tenure. As WWD notes, Jill Abramson even “grilled her last year over declining ad sales.”

Despite Singer’s and the magazine’s struggles, a New York Times spokesperson maintained that T is “a strong performer.” We’ll see how long that viewpoint lasts.

T Magazine Flubs Golden Globe Coverage

Far be it for us to take anyone to task for mistakes in their copy — especially on a micro-blogging system like Twitter where timeliness is almost more important than content — but when you write sloppily under a corporate account you run the risk of alienating not only your readers, but your employer as well.

Take this weekend’s Golden Globe coverage at T: The New York Times Style Magazine: an egregious error in the publication’s Twitter account for The Moment blog and a snarky opening remark to the wrap-up coverage was all it took for blogs to descend on T and tear it to shreds.

Horacio Silva is guilty only of not doing a preliminary Google search before Tweeting, “Is Michael C. Hall playing Bob Marley in an upcoming movie? Don’t get the hat or what he is hiding under it.” It was revealed last week that Hall was battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and ostensibly the hat was to cover his lack of hair from chemotherapy.

Silva apologized on Twitter, and released a statement on Tuesday to Women’s Wear Daily, saying:

“It was a question I posed entirely without malice…I know from the effect it had on my family, how devastating cancer can be and it’s not something that I take lightly. I apologize for any hurt that I may have caused.”

Criticism has also been pointed towards executive editor Andy Port for her comments about female celebrities’ bodies in an after-show wrap-up. Below pictures of Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston and Kate Hudson, Port wrote, “Maybe it’s just me, but I could have sworn that some of the ladies who showed up at the Golden Globes on Sunday had put on a little weight.”

If this comment had come from a male columnist, it would have undoubtedly been called sexist, though considering Port’s ambiguous name (another issue we totally relate to!), we wonder how many T readers wrote in complaining anyway?
