The New Yorker Snubbed at National Magazine Awards

The National Magazine Awards (a.k.a. The Ellies) were given out last night and almost every magazine you can think of won, aside from The New Yorker. The magazine was nominated five times, but failed to take home a paperweight that vaguely resembles an elephant for the first time since 2007. But don’t feel bad for The New Yorker. It’s still The New Yorker.

Other notables from the Ellies: New York won Magazine of The Year and National Geographic won four times, the most of any magazine.

2012 Hillman Award Winners Announced

The Sidney Hillman Foundation has announced the Hillman Award winners, which are given out annually to journalists who promote social and economic justice with their work. This year’s award ceremony will be held May 1 at The TimesCenter building.

The judges selecting the winners included Hendrik Hertzberg, Senior Editor, The New Yorker; Harold Meyerson, Editor-at-Large, The American Prospect and columnist for WaPo; Katrina vanden Heuvel, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of The Nation; Susan Meiselas, a Magnum photographer; and Rose Marie Arce, Senior Producer, CNN.

New York Media Insiders Gather at Atlantic Media Company Soiree

Justin Smith, President of Atlantic Media Company, hosted a party at his home in New York last night in honor of Atlantic Senior Editor Alexis Madrigal, who recently published “Powering the Dream: The History and Promise of Green Technology.”

Atlantic Wire Launches With (Media) Star-Studded Fete

All of the (op-ed) stars were out last night to celebrate the launch of Atlantic Wire, the opinion aggregating sister site to TheAtlantic.com.

Writers for The Atlantic and TheAtlantic.com like Corby Kummer, Marc Ambinder, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Megan McArdle sipped champagne or checked out the incredible view from the balcony at The Glass Houses on the top floor of the Chelsea Arts Tower, as slides of the Atlantic 50 streamed above the bar.

Atlantic Consumer Media chair David Bradley, president Justin Smith and editor James Bennet later said a few words for the crowd, which included The New York Times‘s Frank Rich and David Carr, Rachel Sklar and Glynnis MacNicol from Mediaite.com and AOL DailyFinance‘s Jeff Bercovici.

“We like to fight with each other,” Bennet said of the impetus behind launching Atlantic Wire, which gathers some of the best opinions on the biggest topics of the day in one place.

Bradley, who leads arguably one of the few media companies that is growing despite the recession, offered some advice to would-be media moguls. “Before you own a media company, you should own a company that does well,” he said, noting how his previous experience in business allowed him to effectively operate Atlantic Consumer Media.

Well he certainly knows how to put on a party.

More lists! Maybe itemizing things makes the terrible year media we just suffered easier to bear. Also it’s a fun way to fill the time between now and opening the champagne. Anyway, here’s the final installment:

Rex Sorgatz has put together a very smart list of this year’s most notable blogs. Parts of which made us wonder if we spend enough time on the Internet! Maureen Dowd’s Take on Post-Election Black and White Intermingling

At this point expectations for any real insight from Maureen Dowd are fairly low, but if anyone needed further proof that MoDo was not up to the magnitude of last week’s election results they certainly got it in Sunday’s column wherein she recounts all the interactions she’s since witnessed between white people and black people: “Everywhere I go, some white person is asking some black person how they feel…I saw one white customer quiz his black waitress at length at a chic soul food restaurant downtown…I saw three white women asking a black bartender at the Bombay Club…I saw a white-haired white woman down the block from me running out to strike up a conversation with a black U.P.S. delivery guy.” Then she tries to hit up her mailman. Over at the Atlantic.com Ta-Nehisi Coates had this to say:

Hmm…waitress, bartender, UPS man, mailman. I’m sensing a pattern here. Is Maureen Dowd only concerned with black people who bring shit to white people? Wait? No?…There is so much more snapping to be done here. (Dude, white folks are wishing for holograms — HOLOGRAMS — of Negroes!) But I’m a gentleman, and this is like taking a candy from a baby — a saucy, red-headed baby — but a baby nonetheless. Seriously though, sometimes it’s OK to just give a pound, mutter “respect, respect,” and keep it moving. When in doubt, just keep it moving.

Ta-Nehisi Coates Joins TheAtlantic.com

TheAtlantic.com has announced that Ta-Nehisi Coates, 32, will be joining the website’s blogging masthead. Coates has previously held positions as Time and the Village Voice. Earlier this year he penned and piece for The Atlantic titled “‘This Is How We Lost to the White Man’” about Bill Cosby’s Black Conservatism, as well, he published his childhood memoir The Beautiful Struggle.

TheAtlantic.com has managed to establish a strong online presence over the past year or so, beginning with Andrew Sullivan who moved there after only a year with Time. The line-up now includes Ross Douthat, Megan McArdle, Jeffery Goldberg, Clive Crook, James Fallows, and campaign must-read Marc Ambinder. Coates ostensibly fills the slot left vacant by Matt Yglesias who departed the site this week for the Center for American Progress.
