Sticking a Fork in #Forkgate

Thanks to the quick thinking of Marc Cosentino, co-owner of Staten Island pizza joint Goodfella’s, #Forkgate wasn’t just the goofiest New York news story of the year. The outrage over Mayor de Blasio choosing to eat pizza with a knife and fork was also a trail that benefited a local charity. An anonymous bidder ponied up $2,500 for the scandalous main utensil, an amount that was then donated to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

De Blasio brought with him another fork (and knife) when he appeared on The Daily Show post-Forkgate. But in the end, to a thunderous round of audience applause, he dug into a slice provided by Jon Stewart with just a pair of hands.

David Gregory to Join Katie Couric for Election Special on Yahoo! (NYT)
David Gregory, who was replaced as host of NBC’s Meet The Press in August, will appear in a Yahoo! midterm election program with Katie Couric, the company said Tuesday. TVNewser Gregory is not joining the company, but these appearances often can lead to more permanent placements. Matt Bai, who left The New York Times for Yahoo! last year, and Politico’s Mike Allen are also a part of Yahoo!’s coverage. TVNewser Mark Halperin and John Heilemann will lead Bloomberg’s election night coverage, dubbed Election All-Nighter, which begins at 5 p.m. ET with a special edition of With All Due Respect. Primetime coverage starts at 7 p.m. ET, with Halperin and Heileman joined by Al Hunt and analysts Kim Alfano, Bill Burton, Lanhee Chen, Fred Davis, Patti Solis Doyle, Anita Dunn, Michael Feldman and John Sununu. FishbowlDC Coverage will also extend to an “Election Night dashboard” on BloombergPolitics.com, comprising a Bloomberg TV livestream, website coverage and real-time election data. World Cup Shatters Facebook Engagement Records (LostRemote)
The World Cup set single-event Facebook engagement records within the tournament’s first week. Now, with the tournament over, it is official: the 2014 World Cup is the most talked-about event in Facebook history. From June 12-July 13, 350 million people generated 3 billion World Cup-related interactions. AllFacebook These numbers make the 2014 World Cup the most-talked-about sporting event in the social network’s history. The tournament’s final match, which resulted in 280 million interactions from 88 million users, was the top sporting event in Facebook’s history. Capital New York All told, 26.5 million people watched the match Sunday via either ABC or Univision, making it the most-watched men’s World Cup final ever. ABC drew an average of 17.3 million viewers according to Nielsen Fast National ratings, the best numbers ever for a World Cup final, and the third best for any World Cup game. The two games that beat it were U.S.-Portugal from earlier in this year’s tournament (18.2 million viewers), and the 1999 Women’s final between the U.S. and China (17.9 million viewers). Deadline Hollywood Both ABC/ESPN and Univision had their best World Cup ever this year, with ESPN/ABC up 39 percent in viewership over the 2010 World Cup and up 96 percent over the 2006 World Cup. Over the 64 games of this year’s tournament, Univision was up 34 percent from its total audience from 2010. Variety The combined 26.5 million for Germany’s 1-0 victory is a larger audience than the deciding game for the most recent World Series on Fox (19.2 million) and NBA Finals on ABC (18.0 million), and also tops the BCS Championship game in college football on ESPN in January (25.6 million).

Jarl Mohn Becomes NPR President and CEO (FishbowlDC)
The board of directors of NPR announced Friday that it has selected Jarl Mohn to become its next president and chief executive officer. WSJ Mohn is becoming the fifth leader in a five-year stretch marred by scandal and financial woes. Mohn hails from a flashier background than some of his predecessors at NPR. He spent years as a radio DJ, under the pseudonym Lee Masters, and served as an executive at MTV and VH1 before creating and running E! Entertainment Television. He subsequently served as chief executive of Liberty Digital Inc., a subsidiary of Liberty Media Group focused on interactive and cable television. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Mohn, who currently serves as chairman of Southern California Public Radio, will begin his tenure as CEO on July 1. He was recruited by acting CEO Paul Haaga, who had been running the network since September after the unexpected resignation of Gary Knell, who left to join National Geographic. Deadline New York Knell left NPR after 21 months on the job, succeeding Vivian Schiller, who was forced to resign over a string of controversies. In September NPR hoped to cut its staff by 10 percent by offering staffers a voluntary buyout. It was part of a two-year plan to eliminate an operating cash deficit expected to hit $6.1 million. HuffPost / AP Board chair Kit Jensen says Mohn has a keen ability to identify media and consumer trends and has a strong track record on diversity and fairness. Mohn said in a statement that he considers the new position a mission, not a job.

Sponsors Have Begun to Abandon the Clippers (PRNewser)
The controversy behind the allegedly racist remarks made by L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling has the biggest names behind the Clippers making their way toward the exits. Mediaite State Farm Insurance became the first sponsor to pull its support from the Clippers Monday morning, following audiotape released by TMZ Saturday that allegedly revealed Sterling going on a racist tirade. WSJ More than a half dozen other sponsors of the Clippers, including Kia Motors, Virgin America, Red Bull, Aquahydrate, Mercedez-Benz, Corona and CarMax, also distanced themselves from the team Monday. While some advertisers sponsor the NBA, other brands sponsor individual teams — some advertisers do both. Sports marketing experts suggest that team sponsorship agreements with a big-market team like the Clippers could range anywhere from $100,000 to over $2 million a year, depending on what is included in the marketing package as well as if the advertiser is given category exclusivity. Variety According to new statements, the advertisers felt maintaining ad ties to the team after reports surfaced about Sterling’s remarks would not be in their best interest. “The comments allegedly made by Clippers owner, Donald Sterling, are offensive and reprehensible, and they are inconsistent with our views and values,” Kia said in a statement Monday. The NBA is expected to make an announcement regarding Sterling’s alleged comments today. THR Sterling’s tirade was prompted when his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, posted a photo of herself with Magic Johnson on Instagram. In the audio remarks obtained by TMZ and Deadspin, Sterling expresses displeasure about having black people attend Clipper games. De Blasio Fork Will Be Auctioned Off for Charity

GoodfellasLogoThe so-called “Forkgate” saga has taken a new and delightful turn. Per an item by Staten Island DNAInfo reporter Nicholas Rizzi, the fork used last Friday at Goodfellas Pizzeria by Mayor Bill de Blasio will be auctioned off for a yet-to-be-specified charitable cause:

[Goodfellas co-owner Marc] Cosentino, a retired NYPD sergeant, got an evidence bag from one of his NYPD friends and put the silverware on display behind the bar. Some people have even stopped into the pizza joint just to take pictures of it, Cosentino said.

Insider Reacts to Former CNN Anchor Rick Sanchez Firing for Controversial Comments

As we reported on Friday, CNN abruptly fired afternoon anchor Rick Sanchez.

During a 20-minute satellite radio interview on Thursday, Sanchez made derogatory comments about Jews, his former employers and The Daily Show host Jon Stewart.

One CNN insider tells FishbowlNY, “I don’t think anybody who heard that audio clip could have a positive reaction to it.” 

The insider believes anyone who listened to the interview knew that Sanchez was going to have to deal with the consequences.

Long before Friday, though, there was a report on politico.com that indicated many staffers were apparently not Sanchez supporters.

Prior to the start of John King’s new evening show in January 2010, the report states that 200 employees at the Washington bureau were asked if they respect Sanchez or Wolf Blitzer, host of The Situation Room, as a journalist. 

Nearly all in attendance raised their hands for Blitzer, while politico.com reported at the time that only a select few gave similar support for the Rick’s List host.

Rick Sanchez Fired by CNN

Anchor Rick Sanchez was fired by CNN Friday evening, a day after making inflammatory comments about Jews and The Daily Show host Jon Stewart. Sanchez spoke with Sirius XM satellite radio host Pete Dominick (a former warm-up comic for Stewart’s show).

The terse statement from the cable network where Sanchez worked since 2004 read:

“Rick Sanchez is no longer with the company. We thank Rick for his years of service and we wish him well.”

At one point in the interview, Sanchez told Dominick that Stewart is a “bigot” and added that he [Stewart] was bigoted against “everybody else who’s not like him. Look at his show, I mean, what does he surround himself with?”

Dominick, who works for CNN on John King U.S.A, pointed out that Stewart is Jewish and is therefore a minority.

“I’m telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority? Yeah,” Sanchez responded.

Sanchez’s 3-5 p.m. weekday show is being replaced by CNN Newsroom for the “foreseeable future,”  CNN said.

Political Humor Newt Gingrich Unedited Interview

“The Daily Show” correspondent Jason Jones visited The New York Times‘ offices for a segment on last night’s show, skewering the paper’s stuffy reputation and insistence on printing news a day late despite competition from the digital world.

Jones stumped assistant managing editor Rick Berke with his take on “aged news,” challenging Berke to find anything in the paper “that happened today.” Executive editor Bill Keller seemed a little more amenable to the gentle ribbing. He even laughed at Jones’ timely joke about the creaky old rag’s balance sheets. Hint: what’s black and white and red all over?

However, Keller did manage to get in some digs on The Huffington Post, Google and Drudge, pointing out that they’ll never have Baghdad bureaus “because it’s expensive, because it’s dangerous.” Meanwhile, Keller envisions the Times as one of the last ships afloat in a sea of lifeboats “with people dying to clamber on board.” But, as Jones points out, their lifeboat is made of paper, so good luck if that ship ever goes down.
