This week has seen some major changes over at Nick Denton‘s premiere site, Gawker.com. First off: Managing Editor Gabriel Snyder is out after 18 months at the job. In a memo to the staff, Snyder sniffed that he’d be “canned” after leaving the West Coast and writing for The Observer to come work for Denton. Snyder’s replacement will be Remy Stern, the founder of Cityfile.com, which Denton has also acquired. Interesting choice, since Cityfile and Gawker would have at one point seemed to overlap in their respective goals, but as Gawker has widened itself from a New York-centric blog to a more global outreach, Cityfile’s acquisition could represent Denton’s desire to hang on to the old Gawker stake in Manhattan drama. Denton’s official reason for buying up Cityfile was, as he told The Wall Street Journal, “to compete more effectively with reference sites. We and they are in a battle for position in Google search results.”

Meanwhile Weekends Editor Foster Kamer will be leaving his post to take a new position writing with Roy Edroso at The Village Voice‘s Runnin’ Scared blog starting March 1st. Kamer will also be leaving his (week)day job of associate editor at BlackBook. Foster announced his departure on Twitter, claiming it had nothing to do with Snyder being fired and we believe him…we’ve been hearing rumors of The Voice not-so-subtly courting the 25-year old wunderkind for weeks now.

Harris, the author of a new novel, The Secret Keeper, works at his day job as the U.S. correspondent for the British paper The Observer. Although he now reports from the U.S., he has reported from all over the world, including Africa, which led to the inspiration for his book.

He spoke about his book, which is “the story of a war-torn country and a journalist on a mission: first to report to the world about a horrible war and later to uncover the story behind his former lover’s gruesome post-war murder.”

According to John Koblin in The New York Observer, only 35 people have subscribed to pay for the site. And while it’s easy to mock those numbers, we’re more interested in why: is it because the people who pay to subscribe for sites usually do so in a national context (while Newsday is a local paper)? Is it the high price tag (or the hole in the pay wall)? Or is it that the content that Newsday puts out could be found elsewhere for free on the Internet? Or, most likely, is it because everyone who would read the content on Newsday‘s site can already access it as a subscriber of the print edition or a Cablevision customer?

Update: A spokesperson from Newsday.com issued FishbowlNY the following statement:

“Millions of Cablevision customers in the New York tri-state area and 75 percent of Long Island households, including all Newsday home delivery subscribers, now have exclusive access to newsday.com at no additional charge. Internal research shows that Newsday’s Web site is an extremely popular new benefit to hundreds of thousands of Long Island Cablevision households.”

Politico reports that Benson will also be leaving The Observer by the end of the year to join McGeveran in his new project, although details about it remain unclear. (We can’t wait to find out what it is.)

As Michael Calderone points out, much of the old guard has changed at the Jared Kushner-owned paper this year, with longtime editor Peter Kaplan‘s departure in May and layoffs in June. Last week, Kushner named former Portfolio editor Kyle Pope to the top editor spot, replacing McGeveran.

“Si Newhouse knows how to hold his liquor, according to Graydon Carter,” Page Six said, referring to an article published Sunday in the British pub The Observer. The item then went on to reprint Carter’s quotes about his boss: “One thing you should know about Si — he’s incapable of getting drunk,” and “We’ve double-dated.”

Those quotes sounded familiar, and so did the other ones pulled from the Observer article. The Page Six item goes on:

One former editor tells the newspaper that Newhouse “loves being surrounded by divas and egomaniacs,” recalling how when one editor called another a “[bleep]ing bitch,” Newhouse didn’t mind, responding, “Yes, but she’s our bitch.” Says the ex-editor: “He believes the best will rise and will not be shivved in the back.” Vogue editrix Anna Wintour also bows down to her boss, insisting, “Si is in control, and if you write anything different, you would be 100 percent wrong.”

After some digging, we discovered where we had heard it all before: The Observer article, written by Steve Fishman, is the same one that ran last month in New York magazine. A magazine spokeswoman tells us that writers frequently license their stories for reprinting overseas, although a standard line is usually included within the article recognizing that it was published in New York first. “We’re investigating why that was not the case in this instance,” the New York publicist said.

But if we noticed that the quotes sounded familiar, how could gossip staple Page Six miss the retread quotes? Just one day after Paula Froelich put in her two week notice and already the gossip page is flagging a bit.

In advance of the move from a “newsroom with the hush of the library” to the building that some WSJ reporters call the Death Star, The Observer‘s John Koblin sat down with Journal managing editor Robert Thomson and got a look at the new space. Thomson, who was appointed by News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch last year after the billionaire bought the financial paper, told Koblin that it was “impossible” to make the Journal work in its current offices.
