Micropayments: Pay Walls’ Happy Medium?

cents.jpgWhen entertainment industry trade Variety decided to put its online content behind a pay wall earlier this month, it promised options for how users would go about paying. (Random selection being one of the more out there ideas we’ve heard for pay walls, but hey, everyone is trying something new.)

Other Web sites like those belonging to The Financial Times have embarked on a plan that would eventually allow users to purchase individual articles for a small fee, much like buying a song from iTunes for 99 cents instead of the whole album for $10.

Media analysts don’t necessarily agree that bringing down the price of content (even if it costs customers more money in the long run) will make potential readers take out their wallets. Jay Rosen New York University journalism professor, Bryan Keefer of The Daily Beast and Josh Benton of Harvard’s Nieman Journalism Lab both see the chink in pay walls’ armor as being that the majority of people just won’t pay for content in its current state, period. (Rosen actually predicted the paradoxical idea of paid-for “exclusivity” appealing to link-obsessed readers in a 2005 article for The Huffington Post.) So the people already paying for subscriptions will continue to pay, and the rest won’t be typing in their credit card information, no matter how small the fee is.

WebNewser: The Huffington Post launched its new technology section today. It’s being edited by former Washington Post national reporter Jose Antonio Vargas.

TVNewser: CNBC canceled former Forbes managing editor Dennis Kneale‘s “CNBC Reports,” but he’ll still anchor the network’s “Power Lunch.”

Toledo Blade: President Barack Obama said he would be open to a possible newspaper bailout bill. “I haven’t seen detailed proposals yet, but I’ll be happy to look at them,” he told reporters from The Toledo Blade and The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The New York Times: blogger Andrew Sullivan asked readers to subscribe to the print version of The Atlantic and it worked. “Within two days after last Monday’s post, Mr. Sullivan’s appeal pulled in 75 percent of the subscriptions that the Web site draws in a typical month…The Atlantic expects this month’s subscription orders to be double an average month’s.”

Associated Press: The New York Times Co. has corrected some errors in an SEC filing relating to stock options granted to CEO Janet Robinson and Arthur Sulzberger Jr.

Would You Pay For Exclusive Local Content Like PG+?

pg+.jpgLast night, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette launched a new paid content Web site, PG+.

The members only site promises to provide users with special interactive features and exclusive content provided by the Post-Gazette staff beyond what is available in the paper’s daily print and online versions. The site will be hosted by Post-Gazette bloggers and will place an emphasis on commenting and social networking.

The cost? $36 for an annual membership or $3.99 monthly. Members who sign up now will also receive a free copy of a book written by Post-Gazette staffers about the Superbowl winning Steelers, “Super Six.”

Is this a whole new content model? The Post-Gazette says it is:

“PG+ is not only new for the Post-Gazette; it’s also a new, if not unique, approach to the online pay model for the news industry. Most news organizations that are contemplating charging for content are thinking of using ‘micro-charges,’ billing a small amount for clicks on individual stories. PG+, on the other hand, does not put any existing content behind a pay wall. Rather, it offers members access to a full array of all-new material while continuing the regular.”

On The Menu: Disney’s Marvelous Acquisition


The first day of September means big news for the Morning Media Menu podcast. Disney‘s acquisition of Marvel was the talk for the day for hosts Jason Boog of GalleyCat and AgencySpy‘s Matt Van Hoven. They both agreed the deal is a huge get for Disney, which now controls a huge portion of the cartoon/comic book/superhero market.

Also discussed, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette‘s new paid content Web site, which Matt and Jason agreed might lose the paper some readers unless it can come up with a local angle and provide news that no other media outlet can provide — like a special book about the Superbowl champs.
