Sting Retools ‘Message in a Bottle’

It’s been a stellar week for Jimmy Fallon musical bits. On Wednesday, he took a break from show prep to engage in a “Breakdance Conversation” with Brad Pitt. And on last night’s telecast, he ran Sting through some fun-fun Smartphone business.

The first half of the Sting shtick, wherein Fallon gets Mr. Sumner to sing versions of three familiar ringtones, is cool. Especially when the ringtone sounds suspiciously like an old copyrighted Police song. But where this bit really soared is towards the end (starting at the three-minute mark), when the host enlists the superstar to record an audience member’s mobile phone outgoing voicemail message.

Stewart Copeland on Fringe Benefit of Being in a Band Called The Police

JayMohrStewartCopelandThe latest episode of Jay Mohr‘s weekly podcast Mohr Stories saw The Police’s former drummer head west of the 405 in Los Angeles to sit down for a chat. Mohr has two more big names from the music side this month: Sex Pistol Steve Jones (October 14) and Guns N’ Roses guitarist Duff McKagan (October 28).

The perks of being in a massively successful band like The Police are for the most part pretty obvious. But at one point during the Mohr conversation, Copeland outlined a less sexy, druggy, rock’n roll-y one:

“A strange twist of fate meant that for about 20 years, I never got a speeding ticket or anything. I would get pulled over… ‘Mr. Copeland, I cannot give you a ticket. Have a nice day. Can you sign this for all my buddies back at the station?’”…

LAT In 90 Seconds

39341536.jpgTelling More About the Tell-All: Can’t get enough about Scott McClellan? Well, here’s more and more and even more. The LAT has, basically, what everyone else had about it… though we did appreciate the description of the former press secretary as “the 40-year-old, moon-faced, tennis-playing, Diet Coke-drinking McClellan.”

aftralogo29.jpgLAT on AFTRA: This next-day story goes for the analysis angle with this lede: “The new contract struck between the Hollywood studios and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists achieved across-the-board gains for actors, especially for journeyman performers who have seen their incomes squeezed in recent years. But it is not clear if those gains will be sufficient to mollify leaders of the larger Screen Actors Guild, which resumed negotiations with the studios on Wednesday.”

39348937.jpgGood Mommy Moment: Mary McNamara combats all that Hannah Montana nonsense by introducing her school-aged kids to a real rock concert, thanks to The Police. We might be alone in this, but we appreciate a concert review that includes kids and a bit of personal info about the writer. Very Peter Larsen.
