Matt Lauer Extends Contract with Today

Matt Lauer, everyone’s favorite (uh, okay, not everyone’s favorite) morning show host is going to be around for a few more years.

Lauer has signed a contract extension with Today, a show he first started co-anchoring in 1997.

The specifics of the deal weren’t disclosed, but keep in mind that his current contract was supposedly pocketing Lauer about $20 million a year. So this extension is likely paying him more than that. Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

Awl Spoof Inspires Ex-Journo to Teach Dogs How to Use iPads

The above headline is not a joke, even though The Awl article that inspired it was.

Kelly Faircloth, picking up on her earlier BetaBeat item and a report this week by The Today Showexplains that once-upon-a-time New York Observer colleague Anna Jane Grossman is currently involved with a business that teaches dogs how to use iPads, so that these pampered canines can more effectively engage with their owners. And that’s not the funniest part.

As Today revealed, Grossman got the iPad learning idea from a January 2011 spoof (pictured) written for The Awl by David Parker. Gag article, meet real-life spin off.

Paula Deen Appears on Today, Doesn’t Know if Racist Word is Racist

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Paula Deen is crazy as a fox. She’s also a racist. While she probably has an idea that she’s one or five crayons short of a pack, she’s still being stubborn about the latter part. In an interview with Matt Lauer, Deen was asked if she was a racist and she replied “no.” Then, when Lauer asked her if the “n word” was offensive to black people, she gave a puzzling answer:

I don’t know, I have asked myself that so many times. It’s very distressing for me to go into my kitchens and hear what these young people are calling each other … it’s very distressing for me. I think for this problem to be worked on, that these young people are gonna have to take control and start showing respect for each other.

To recap: Deen doesn’t know if an extremely racist word is racist because… Kids these days. Yes, Deen, America’s youth is to blame for your racism. It’s quite a stretch, but like we said, craaaaaazyyyyy.

Meredith Vieira is Not Interested in Today Show Gossip, Defends Matt Lauer

You can go ahead and count Meredith Vieira among those who won’t be buying Top of The Morning, by Brian Stelter. Vieira told The New York Post that she wasn’t interested in reading the book, which highlights all the high school level drama at the Today show and more.

Vieira explained that the subject of the book hit a little too close to home:

I’m over it… I’ve kind of been-there-done-that, and I don’t know what the interest is. I don’t want to get on a high horse, because I understand why people write it. I’m not trying to say he’s [Stelter] wrong to do it, but I look at it and it’s so personal to me. It’s my friends.

And speaking of friends, Vieira is a Matt Lauer fan. “I think what is happening to Matt is really wrong,” she said. Almost as wrong as forcing a coworker out of a job simply because you don’t get along! Almost.

Kathie Lee Gifford Wanted to Publish an Ad Defending Matt Lauer

The extensive bashing of Matt Lauer has left him with few fans, but Kathie Lee Gifford — in her own goofy way — wanted to make sure everyone knew he still had friends at the Today show. The New York Daily News reports that her plan was to buy a full page ad in USA Today, featuring signatures from “hundreds” of Today staffers.

The idea of a pity party didn’t sit well with Lauer, so he asked her not to do it. Instead, she told the Daily News all about it, and now everyone knows about the ad anyway. Well done.

Here’s the ad’s cheesy copy:

The Today Show Sounds Like an Awful Place to Work

The drama enveloping the Today show gets another indepth look today, courtesy of an excerpt from Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, by Matt Lauer’s arch nemesis, Brian Stelter.

In the piece — published by the New York Times — Stelter piles on the current thinking that Lauer and others forced out Ann Curry. In fact, after reading the article, it sounds like the Today show is an absolutely awful place to work.

As Stelter reports, the staffers at Today were all pretty much assholes:
