The Atlantic has named Matt Thompson deputy editor of TheAtlantic.com. Thompson comes to The Atlantic from NPR, where he served as director of vertical initiatives. He also founded NPR’s Code Switch blog. Prior to joining NPR, Thompson was deputy web editor for The Star Tribune.
“Matt is a force,” said J.J. Gould, TheAtlantic.com’s editor, in a statement. “He’s creative about new media and their emerging potential, he’s serious about journalism as a public good, and he’s super-smart about the requirements of leadership in a digital organization. He’s also just a natural fit for The Atlantic personally. Working with him is going to be a lot of fun.”
Thompson will join The Atlantic in January.
