Will The Times Kill TimesSelect?

Friedman hating on TimesSelect at the 2006 Webby Awards

That’s what Slate‘s Mickey Kaus claims: the New York Times is about to cancel TimesSelect. At this time, less than 225,000 users are paying the service’s $49.95 annual fee. In November 2005, TimesSelect only had 135,000 customers — and the slow rise in subscriptions is only for starters. Silicon Alley Insider dissected the rumor and examined the many reasons why the Times might want to kill the controversial service. They noted that the Times and WSJ are the only major newspapers that use subscription walls; moreso, the loss of revenue from TimesSelect (+/- $11 million annually) can easily be recouped by the page views by freeing David Brooks, Maureen Dowd and vocal TimesSelect critic Thomas Friedman. After all, even Instapundit doesn’t read TimesSelect anymore.

    Thomas Friedman approves

As part of its “journalistic mission to get people talking on campuses,” nytimes.com is set to give free access for its often-ridiculed TimesSelect content to all those with a “.edu” e-mail address. The open access begins March 13. Vivian Schiller, senior vice president and general manager at NYTimes.com: “We wanted to open that up so that college students and professors can have a dialogue.”

The Times also wanted to drum up buzz for its “Win a Trip with Nick” contest, in which op-ed columnist Nicholas Kristof, chooses one college or graduate student and one middle or high school teacher to accompany him on a June trip to Africa.

  • Times‘ Friedman Responds To Radar Over Second Home In Aspen

New York Times op-ed columnist and frequent flyer Thomas Friedman was a bit irked by a recent piece posted on Radar which asserted he maintained a second home in Aspen. Friedman responded via e-mail:

Thanks for your piece on Radar[Online]. You got all your facts right, but one. We don’t have a second home in Aspen, or anywhere else. I will need to get more things wrong to achieve that status. I think you might be referring to my in-laws’ home, where we stay when we visit them. You seem to be interested in facts, so I figured you would want to know. All best, Tom Friedman

Still, as FishbowlNY found out last year , Friedman is fully aware of his seemingly open-ended Times expense account.
