Former Giants Star Tiki Barber Joins SNY Playoff Coverage

The Giants are the toast of the town following their playoff win at the Green Bay Packers last weekend. Now, the G-Men are just 60 minutes from another Super Bowl appearance. They visit the 49ers Sunday evening for the Conference Championship game.

And, SNY is bringing back for an fan favorite.

Tiki Barber, the former Giants star running back, will join the regional sports network’s extensive coverage.

In addition, former Giants offensive lineman Shaun O’Hara will continue his analyst role on SNY’s Giants coverage — including the network’s Big Blue Live post game show — which will air immediately after Sunday’s NFC Championship game. Big Blue Live will showcase all of the post-game press conferences, exclusive on-field interviews and reactions from both the Giants’ and 49ers’ players and coaches.

Lunch: A Heaping Helping of the Usual Suspects

We’ve been spoiled by the steady stream of A-listers we’ve come to meet during our weekly Wednesday visits. So you can imagine our disappointment when we heard we missed Gabriel Byrne, who was in the dining room a week or so ago on a Tuesday. (We know more than a few folks who are obsessed with his portrayal of the tortured but tender shrink on HBO’s In Treatment.) But timing is everything, isn’t it?

There weren’t any stars of the big or small screen at Michael’s today, but the place was packed with plenty of movers and shakers to keep things interesting. I was lunching with public relations guru Tom Goodman, president and CEO of Goodman Media. Tom is one of the busiest — and nicest — guys in the business. He started his firm in 1996 after toiling in PR for CBS and ABC (where he traveled with Peter Jennings). British Airways “put us in business,” says Tom, and NBC, who tapped him to help launch MSNBC, soon followed. Tom is gearing up for a jam-packed summer promoting The World Science Festival in June (Harrison Ford is expected at the gala), Joe Torre‘s Safe at Home Foundation celebrity golf tournament at Trump National Golf Course in July and the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock with a weekend-long celebration in August at The Museum at Bethel Woods. Next month, the museum will also premiere an exhibit of photos — many never before seen — by photojournalist Gerry Deiter of John Lennon‘s and Yoko Ono‘s famous 1969 bed-in for peace. Sounds groovy…

FishbowlLA correspondent Dan Cox reports from the Television Critics Association tour:

The second Television Critics Association session that followed NBC Entertainment president Ben Silverman‘s coming out party was an assembly of ex-NFL players and broadcasters around NBC’s Sunday Night Football (formerly known as Monday Night Football), including broadcaster Bob Costas, announcer Al Michaels, announcer and former coach John Madden, announcer and former Cincinnati Bengal wide out Cris Collinsworth, former New York Giants star-turned-Today show Tiki Barber and Steelers star Jerome Bettis, NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol as well as a handful of network execs. The subject of football (or lack of it) in L.A. came up after former Hollywood Reporter editor-in-chief Alex Ben Block blurted out: “When are we going to see football in L.A., the second biggest market for a sports team?”

Costas’ throat-clearing reply: “The L.A. market sucks.”

Tiki On Va. Tech: ‘It Was Almost Weird’

Tiki Barber made his Today show debut this week and, according to Adam Duerson of SI.com, was not exactly ready for the pressure of covering the massacre at Virginia Tech, fumbling (sorry) a key segment:

I’ll say this much: Tiki’s not a reporter yet. (Granted, neither were many of the alleged reporters we saw jabbing microphones in the faces of grieving family members and VT students. One reporter asked a student how he felt when people called him a hero. The poor kid just wept for 30 seconds before CNN finally cut away. Classy, guys.)

Tiki wasn’t ready for this — and there’s no way he could have been. I have no doubt he would have hit Buckingham out of the park, but he has a long way to come as a serious reporter and NBC certainly would have been better off letting him sit out the road trip. That’s not a knock. This probably isn’t how he wanted to start his career anyway. And he’ll learn. He’ll learn not to blink so damn much. He’ll learn to do some actual reporting. (He sat in a bar and asked kids how they felt. Nothing new.) And he’ll learn, say, to come a little more prepared for a simple question about the atmosphere in Blacksburg. His response, “It was almost weird.” I would hope so, Tiki. At the very least, Tiki has the look down. He looks damn good in a beige trench coat. The rest will come eventually.

It made sense to try it, considering Tiki’s a Roanoke, Virginia native and University of Virginia alum.

Next Up For Tiki: ‘The Thinking Man’s Football Book’

Tiki Barber, freshly-retired NFL star running back and self-professed prince-in-training of the New York media scene, is set to publish his autobiography — at the ripe age of 31. The lucky publisher? Simon Spotlight Entertainment, an imprint of the same Simon & Schuster that publishes the youth sports books penned by Tiki and unretired brother Ronde of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

FishbowlNY spoke with his editor, Tricia Boczkowski, to get Tiki’s backfield pitch (sorry). In addition to cataloging his impressive football achievments, the upcoming book will “absolutely” extend to Tiki’s blossoming media career and aspirations, his various other “off-the-field passions” and the post-NFL challenges ahead.

Apparently, the fact that Tiki’s retiring at the top of his game is not the only draw this book should have for readers. According to Boczkowski, although there are other books by NFL-ers “like T.O. [Terrell Owens]” and others, “the difference here is that Tiki is really smart. You could call him the thinking man’s football player.” Accordingly, this will stand out from the rest as “the thinking man’s football book.”

No offense to T.O. and all those other non-thinking football players, of course.

The book is due September 18.

Some essential Tiki-isms from the soon-to-be-retired Giants running back in this month’s Gotham magazine:

Gotham: Ronde has described you as the “King of New York media.” Do you consider that an accurate description?

Tiki Barber: I wouldn’t say I’m the king. I dabble a lot, and I’m working towards being, maybe … a prince.

G: You already appear on the TV show Fox & Friends once a week. Are you thinking about another morning show?

TB: I think a morning show suits my personality more so than an evening news show.

G: What’s next for you? More sportscasting?

TB: No-well, probably some. But [I plan to] mostly work outside of the sports arena. We’re talking to all the major networks: ABC, NBC, FOX…

Wow. So, Tiki, what are the major networks gonna get?

G: Are we going to see a new side of you, one we haven’t seen before?

TB: You’ve seen it all.

That, Tiki, could be the problem. But hey, at least Tiki knows what it takes to be a journalist:
