Nikki Finke Taps HollywoodWiretap.com for Two New Hires

The afternoon of Thanksgiving seems like a strange time to tease news of “two important staff additions.” But that was the case this past Thursday at Deadline.com, where both new employees are already on board.

Kinsey Lowe, the new nighttime managing editor, and Nancy Tartaglione-Moore, international editor, come straight from HollywoodWiretap.com, a website that once aimed to become the Drudge Report of entertainment news. Currently owned by Hollywood.com, this aggregator has several Deadline.com-derived items in its stream of “Exclusives.”

Lowe joins Deadline.com daytime managing editor Patrick Hipes, formerly at the Hollywood Reporter, while Tartaglione takes over for Deadline London editor Tim Adler. Finke says Adler will continue to contribute to the site as a freelancer.

Deadline.com’s London Editor Steps Down (Updated)

Tim Adler is retiring his post as editor of Deadline|London. Adler, an accomplished entertainment business journalist, took the helm of Deadline|London in January of 2010.

FishbowlLA is hearing from multiple sources, all of whom wish to remain anonymous, that Adler quit, “because he got tired of Nikki Finke calling him 20 times a day.” While a barrage of phone calls is hardly out of character for Finke, a place on her speed dial seems a strange reason to quit.

Finke’s version of events are considerably less melodramatic. She tells FishbowlLA:

Tim is continuing to write for Deadline London while finishing a book and planning to work on other book projects. Meanwhile, I’m about to start looking for an international editor. I am proud of the fact that Deadline continues to have a remarkably stable work force of staff and freelancers.

We’ve been unable to reach Adler for comment, but we did at least come up with a photo.

Update: When I asked Nikki Finke for a comment on Adler’s retirement, I neglected to mention the rumor that she was calling him “20 times a day.” I want apologize if Finke felt broadsided by the claim, and for not giving her a chance to respond before it was published.

While our sources are reliable, they also insist on remaining anonymous, and Adler himself remains unreachable for comment. Finke claims it is false. We haven’t seen the phone records, so we don’t know. FishbowlLA would love an on-the-record response from Finke that we can share with our readers.

Nikki Finke Hires Variety Vet To Helm Deadline New York

Ever since Nikki Finke sold her blog Deadline Hollywood Daily to Mail.com Media Corp. in June, we’ve been looking forward to see who she would hire as New York editor as Deadline expands to become a bicoastal pub.

Last night Finke announced that she had chosen Mike Fleming, a 20-year Variety veteran, to helm her East Coast operations, to be called Deadline New York. She’s also brought on Tim Adler to lead Deadline London.

As editor of Deadline New York, Fleming will cover “film and television dealmaking and production and casting,” and is looking forward to “expand[ing] his turf by breaking news and offering analysis about books, media, TV news, theater, and other Gotham-based infotainment arenas.”

Fleming’s hiring has tongues wagging all over Hollywood, reports our sister pub FishbowlLA. His departure might mark the end of Variety‘s relevance, but it looks like Deadline.com will now be getting a whole new set of readers. New York media watchers, take note.
