Tyler Perry Wows in Gone Girl

Even in reviews of Gone Girl that are mixed or negative, Tyler Perry has still been receiving the unequivocal thumbs up.

Here for example is what less-than-impressed Boston Globe reviewer Mark Feeney wrote:

Playing a high-powered defense attorney, Tyler Perry is smooth, funny and unflappable. Gone Girl would be a lot more entertaining, and probably a lot better, if he and Ben Affleck had exchanged roles.

The choice of Perry by David Fincher is this film’s “greatest coup” (Leonard Maltin, Indiewire); the performance is “unexpectedly good” (Rafer Guzman, Newsday); it’s an “inspired piece of casting” (Tom Carson, GQ). And so on.

There are countless examples in Hollywood of a successful film or TV project being rejected by the studios or networks before eventually going on to find a moment in the sun. But in the case of The Kennedys, this is also what happened with Reelz Channel’s PR campaign for the 2011 Primetime Emmys. The total of ten received by the Greg Kinnear-Katie Holmes drama is all the more impressive given the fact that awards season rookie Reelz was forced to do the campaigning themselves.

“We were turned down by some of the biggest [Emmy] PR firms in Los Angeles,” Reelz CEO Stan Hubbard (pictured) tells FishbowlLA via telephone. “We were basically told that we’d embarrass ourselves if we ran an Emmy campaign.”

Critic Lets Loose with Rip-Roaring (Nicolas) Cage Match

There’s a wonderful essay in the February 2011 issue of GQ Magazine by Tom Carson. Titled “National Treasure”, it tackles the amorphous legacy of actor Nicolas Cage. Or, as the sub-headline more aptly puts it: “As Drive Angry arrives in theaters, the question must be asked: Can anything explain the lunatic career of Nicolas Cage?”

This is just flat out great writing. From the opening sentence referencing Xanax to the closing challenge of naming a truly boring Cage movie, Carson careens through the actor’s career at a gonzo pace in keeping with his manic subject’s on-screen demeanor. It’s tough to pick a favorite paragraph, as there are so many. But here’s one highlight:

Actors clutching a new Oscar acquire not only artistic clout but market value; the question is which bent they’ll indulge. Cage zeroed in on the second with a single-mindedness exceeded only by Denzel Washington‘s treatment of dumb thrillers as acting sinecures.
