Graham Norton on Tom Cruise, ‘Bad Boyfriend’ and More

GrahamNortonHeDevilCoverPolly Vernon‘s profile of Graham Norton for the New Zealand Herald is unlikely to leave a single reader “banjaxed.” As opposed to Norton himself, to whom Vernon at one point applies that descriptive to convey the talk show host’s reaction to a question about the perhaps-missed-opportunity of engaging a female sex surrogate.

Vernon and Norton are a match made in dazzling-wit heaven. The 51-year-old UK media star, who foresees exiting his BBC America talker in three years, says he is at peace with both not making it “big” in the U.S. and being less proactive than a certain year-older A-lister:

Tom Cruise is supernaturally good at [being nice]. Nothing will prepare you for it. He is like an alien. He’s like someone from a different planet! So like, on the way in here, he’ll have met that manager guy, who did introduce himself to me, but I don’t remember his name. Tom will know it! And on the way out, he’ll thank him for everything. And then that guy will love Tom Cruise forever. We can be pleasant to him, but already we’ve messed up, because we don’t remember his name. And the difference is that.”

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise – Two Years Later

KatieHolmesPeopleOctober2014According to the New York Daily News, Katie Holmes placed some limits around this week’s big interview with People. At least two of which involved the cover:

“Tom’s name could not appear on the cover,” says our source… “The coverage had to be positive and there also couldn’t be a picture of Suri on the cover, because Katie wanted to protect her daughter.”

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise was in London this month and per an Instagram photo showing him standing alongside former Miss Venezuela World Ruddy Rodriguez, he could be seen wearing his Scientology Freedom Medal of Valor.

Celebrity Photographer Blake Little Experiments with Honey

BlakeLittleVeteran magazine editor Richard Pérez-Feria knows Blake Little‘s work intimately. He has over the years frequently commissioned the famed LA-based photographer to shoot celebrities and has a portrait shot by Little of actress Sonia Braga hanging in his home.

When Pérez-Feria recently caught up with Little for a Q&A for 50+ focused website NowItCounts, the photographer – whose career trajectory mirrors that of early subject Tom Cruise – spoke about a new, intriguing focus. One that is sure to garner much more attention starting at the end of this year:

“My brand new body of work is called Preservation. I photographed 90 people — men, women, children from age two to 85 – all completely covered in honey. Preservation will be published this December and exhibited at the Paul Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles in March 2015.”

Glossy Mag Ignores Lindsay Lohan’s Rep

ShutterstockLindsayLohan2013Last week, we wrote about OK! magazine’s inventive Jennifer Aniston cover story. This week, once again per Gossip Cop, it’s deja voodoo all over again as the magazine is making up more great stories. With yet another noteworthy twist.

It’s one thing to falsely allege that Tom Cruise and Lindsay Lohan hooked up in London. It’s quite another to race towards deadline with that fable after a rep for one of the celebrities has confirmed “Tom & Lindsay: IT’S ON!” is way off. From Gossip Cop associate editor Shari Weissreport:

The entire OK! dating premise was a “lie,” Lohan’s rep told Gossip Cop exclusively. Lohan’s spokesperson even revealed to us that she told the tabloid that its story was wrong and laughable, and yet the magazine still chose to run it.

These Playboy Playmates Became Journalists

There’s an interesting wrinkle to this week’s New York magazine photo feature highlighting six Playmates from Playboy‘s vintage era. Two of them are now journalists while a third works in public relations.

Chicago society columnist CandaceJordanTagCandace Jordan writes that because the photos for the article were shot in New York way back in February, she had become convinced the piece would never run. But it’s finally out, spotlighting some unusual life trajectories and the work of a very qualified photographer. From Jordan’s column:

Nadav Kander was flown in from England for this feature. He’s a London-based photographer, artist and director, known for his portraiture and landscapes. His work is included in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and others. He even shot President Obama for the cover of Time magazine as its “Person of the Year.” To say he’s talented is an understatement.

Fox News Gets the Zellweger Skinny

Once upon a time, Tom Cruise told Renée Zellweger: “You complete me.” But today, it’s all about Renee’s complete “new” me.

In the wake of Zellweger’s shockingly unfamiliar red carpet face, presented Monday at Elle magazine’s “Women in Hollywood” awards event in Los Angeles, Fox News did a little investigating. Our main takeaway? We’re a long way from Hollywood’s Golden Age:

“It looks like she had eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, Botox, lip fillers and cheek fillers,” founder and partner of Fountain Medical Group Dr. Todd Schlifstein, who doesn’t treat Zellweger, told FOX 411. “It appears she changed the shape of eye and eyelid. She removed excess skin, tightened skin around the area.”

Birthday Boy Tom Cruise Doing Better Than Newsweek

ShutterstockTomCruiseNMUnintentionally, D.B. Hebbard over at Talking New Media may wind up with today’s most original Tom Cruise born-on-the-third-of-July reference. Leading off a piece about Newsweek, the journalist writes:

The newsweekly is like Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire, it may still be alive, but it is not looking very good. At least that is what users of the digital edition are telling the publisher.

Well done. But what of the more conventional coverage today of an A-lister who belies the fact that he is on the Edge of Early Bird Specials?

Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt Blur the Premiere Lines

London; Paris; New York. That’s the schedule today for Edge of Tomorrow co-stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, beginning – so as to pull it off – with an unusually early premiere in Leicester Square.

Ahead of today’s rainy UK first leg, Blunt told Hello! magazine she had no doubt whose idea the trifecta was:

“When I heard about the premiere idea of three in one day I just said, ‘That’s Tom’s idea,’ I knew it,” said Emily in the lead-up to the challenge. “It had to be Tom Cruise’s idea.”

Richard Quest Recalls Dad’s Spot-On Career Advice

CNN’s coverage of the Malaysian airliner disappearance has once again thrust Richard Quest to the fore. Quest divides his time between New York and London, but for a recent interview with youthful Malaysian writer Kenneth Chaw, the location was Kuala Lumpur, where the CNN vet logged the latest episode of monthly series Business Traveller.

Chaw notes that Quest, ever the consummate broadcast journalist, had a key piece of advice for his interviewer right off the bat. Quest also shared this great memory:

Quest’s illustrious career in journalism got its start in law. “I had to have a career if it all went horribly wrong. My late father told me to get a decent job. He always said, ‘If you’re a journalist, you would have the best dinner party stories and the smallest car parked outside.’ And he was right,” said Quest, who read law in the University of Leeds and was called to the Bar.

THR Lands Interview with Pat Kingsley

As the specter of Nikki Finke has been to entertainment journalism, so too once was the aura of Pat Kingsley to celebrity PR. And given Hollywood Reporter executive features editor Stephen Galloway‘s wily ways, we’re not at all surprised that it is he who landed Kingsley’s first official post-retirement interview.

THRPatKingsleyImageGalloway paid a visit to the 81-year-old Kingsley at her Pacific Palisades home the day before Thanksgiving. She remains too classy to spill the beans on former clients and any major contretemps (except for The TODAY Show and Jeff Zucker; what does that say about Zucker?). Rather, the joy of this feature comes largely from the small details about Kingsley’s current life and daily routine:

She gets up around 7:30 or 8 a.m., makes breakfast and does a little exercise. Then she switches on CNN (“I want the news, not opinions”), watches that and sports but relatively little entertainment…
