Reporter Reads and Replies to Every Single PR Pitch

ZachSchonfeldGraphicIf the ONA handed out Purple Hearts, Newsweek‘s Zach Schonfeld would surely be in the running in that category for 2014.

Per a hilarious essay, Schonfeld shares the ten ground rules for his August 30-September 5 experiment of reading and replying to every single emailed PR pitch. He summarizes his subsequent experiences in the form of a diary, including where applicable a ‘Weirdest PR excerpt of the day.’ Here’s two of our favorites from that honor roll:

Weirdest PR excerpt of the day: “Tori [Spelling], Dean [McDermott] and the kids posed for photos with their favorite Snackeez colors, while Tori and Dean told everyone about their love of the product.”

Adding Up Some Twitter Celebrity Endorsement Math

In the heyday of Internet email marketing, a one to three percent “click-through” rate was considered acceptable. Today, with Twitter offering an instantaneous version of the e-mail blast, how does the service compare? Especially when celebrity accounts with large follower counts are doing the blasting?

AP business writer Christina Rexrode has a rare, specific answer today. After leading with examples such as Snoop Dogg and Tori Spelling, she passes on some intriguing info from the client side:

Dan Smith, vice president of marketing for the website CampusLIVE, which helps advertisers connect with college students… paid Lindsay Lohan about $3,500 for one tweet with link: ‘These challenges for college kids on #CampusLIVE are SO addicting!’

The post to Lohan’s 2.6 million fans drove about 4,500 clicks to the website, Smith said. But he also said he wasn’t sure if he’d use her again…

Nick Cannon Launches Pop Culture News Hub

Like BUZZMEDIA, fellow LA media company EQAL is largely all about lending an invisible hand to celebrities on the web. They’ve worked with Tori Spelling, Randy Jackson, Lauren Conrad and now, actor-singer Nick Cannon.

As of Wednesday, Mariah Carey‘s 30-year-old significant other is editor-in-chief of NickCannon.com, an official website relaunched as a content destination focused on celebrity gossip, news and interviews. FishbowlLA imagines Mr. C will be the sharer of more than one future scoop about Mrs. C.

Helping Cannon and his Ncredible team featuring co-managing editor Jamal Jimoh is EQAL’s director of content Adam Wescott, who is officially titled as managing editor of the revamped site. Also assisting from the EQAL end are company editor C.J. Arabia and vice-president of design Tom Walker. Kudos to Walker for the uncluttered retro-style, grey background layout.

Beverly Hills, 90210 Nostalgia Not What It Used to Be

Just a few months ago, the Hermosa Beach home used for exterior beach house shots on the original Beverly Hills, 90210 TV series was on the market for $10.5 million. Now, per Zillow blogger Erika Ziggs, it can be yours for $8.99 mill.

Given the fact that this is the home is where Tori Spelling‘s character Donna Martin lost her her virginity, you’d think Monday’s Twitter news of the actress’ real-life third pregnancy would boost resale value, not puncture it. But the celebrity housing bubble is apparently not quite as impervious to the overall downturn in Hermosa Beach 90254.

Ross Mathews Finally Makes It Into an Oscar Night Party

All these years of doing bits for Jay Leno, and Sunday, February 27th turned out to be the first time Ross Mathews finally crossed over from the red carpet into a big-time LA Oscar party.

His report from Sir Elton John‘s fundraising bash at the Pacific Design Center aired Monday and features a range of celebs including Jamie Foxx, Glee‘s Jane Lynch, Paul Rudd, American Idol judge Steven Tyler, and Modern Family‘s Eric Stonestreet. A running gag had Mathews asking each famous interviewee to donate an item to Jay’s “gift bag.”

Things took an unexpected turn for the X-rated when The Tonight Show correspondent ran into Tori Spelling. The combination of her crotchless panties and the venue’s mirrored floor actually led to some brief NBC blurring:

ABC Flips for Tori Spelling, Jeff Lewis

LA Times writer Joe Flint had a nice little “scooplet” yesterday via the newspaper’s “Show Tracker” blog. The item has already been picked up by TV Guide and TV Squad, and will no doubt be mutating across the web throughout the day.

ABC Media Productions is apparently happy with a recent test run of potential new daytime talk show mates Tori Spelling and Jeff Lewis (pictured), host of Bravo’s Flipping Out. Writes Flint:

In the test pilot with Spelling last week, the two had good chemistry. The show, which is still in the development stage, wants to be a talk show version of Will & Grace.

The Domino’s PR Nightmare

Earlier this week a video by two Domino’s Pizza employees showcasing the disgusting things they did to unsuspecting customers’ food- and Tori Spelling‘s new book- exploded on the internet. Domino’s has fired the employees, temporarily shut down the store they worked at, and released the following video statement from company president Patrick Doyle. Not sure any of it is going to help-

Worst Book Promo Ever – Even for Tori Spelling!

Tori Spelling, as we have reported before – has had a rough go in the promo department.

This video has to be the worst.

Here there are Domino’s employees sticking cheese up their nose and otherwise violating a sandwich that is about to be delivered to an unsuspecting customer – and quick apropos of nothing the woman filming saying, “And look what I’m reading – sTori Telling.”

All publicity? Really?

More Companies Embrace the Slippery Slope of ‘Consulting’

1-Ladies-011209.jpgDan Abrams caused a bit of a stir last month when he announced he was starting the media consulting firm Abrams Research, but lately it’s beginning to look as though he might just be at the forefront of a new trend. First off is a story from AdAge about the formation by NBC of a women’s “panel” comprised of such luminaries as Maria Bartiromo, Meredith Vieira, Tori Spelling, and Susan Lyne who have been brought together to offer “marketing and general business advice to NBC Universal and its clients on how to reach women.”

The group will also blog, write and appear on air for the media company’s women-oriented properties and contribute to a quarterly newsletter, “Power of the Purse,” covering marketing to the demographic and the latest female trends. The panel will convene for the first time Feb. 10. In effect, it could become the most powerful female-focused agency in the country.

The article goes on to note that members will be able to “recuse themselves if necessary to avoid conflicts.” Meanwhile, some folks attending the CES out in Las Vegas (where our own Chris Ariens is at), appear to be taking “consulting” to an extreme.
