Oprah Tops ForbesWoman‘s List Of Media’s Most Powerful Women

proah.pngLong before Mediaite.com was just a twinkle in Dan Abrams‘ eye, Forbes was ranking the richest people in the world, the most powerful celebrities and just about anything worth ranking.

Today, the business magazine’s sister publication, ForbesWoman has put out its list of the 30 most influential women in the media world.

Not surprisingly, Oprah Winfrey tops the list, earning an unmatched $275 million last year. But earnings alone don’t translate to power, as the top five can contest. Joining Oprah are Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, Ellen DeGeneres (the number two earner with $35 million last year) and Tyra Banks — the third top earner on the list with $23 million banked (ha) last year. Television journalists Sawyer and Walters pushed ahead of the top-earning talk show hosts thanks to the massive audiences they reach with their regular hosting gigs and primetime specials.

The whole list is a nice mix of traditional media and online media personalities and bloggers, like Arianna Huffington (number 12), Tina Brown (25) and mommy blogger and dooce.com founder Heather Armstrong (26).

Harper’s Brown Loves Making “A Fantastical Idea A Reality”

brown.png Harper’s Bazaar features and special projects director Laura Brown spoke with FishbowlNY contributor Diane Clehane for a “What Do You Do?” article on Mediabistro.com earlier this week.

The Australian editor and special judge on Bravo’s “Project Runway” spin-off “The Fashion Show” spoke about the challenges of her unique job including celebrity wrangling and conceptualizing the special features that get the magazine noticed, like last year’s photo feature with Tyra Banks as Michelle Obama.

Have favorite part of the job? “It’s basically being able to make what is seemingly an untenable idea or a fantastical idea a reality — to have a light bulb go on over your head like, ‘How about Tyra [Banks] as Michelle Obama?’ and then having that happen,” she said. “I feel like a little girl from Sydney when I do those things like, ‘Wow, look at that!’”

Getting into the details of how the Tyra/Michelle piece came about, Brown said:

“Obviously, the election was on everyone’s mind. I just said to [Tyra], ‘Why don’t we do this?’ We have one pop cultural icon who is paying homage to a woman who is about to become first lady and is clearly an icon herself.’ She got it straight away. She had no hesitation whatsoever. We shot this months before the election, and we imagined the White House with the family. If we get one point for prescience, we’ll take it…She was great. We got so much press. There were people who loved it — and then there were some people from Harvard who couldn’t believe we put a Harvard sweatshirt on Tyra and thought it was outrageous. I love doing that kind of stuff when you get a reaction from people. That’s the point — you don’t shoot stories to have them die.”

Read on for Brown’s take on which celebrities sell best today and some inspiring advice for magazine writers.

Glamour Women of the Year Awards: ‘I’d Like to Thank My Mother’

lieveglm.jpgLast night’s Glamour Women of the Year Awards ceremony held at Carnegie Hall was a rare thing — interesting and inspiring all at the same time (and how often can you say that?!) We’ve all heard more than once in the last twelve months that regardless of the outcome of this election this year has been all about the woman. And last night’s line-up of recipients, which included Condoleezza Rice, Tyra Banks, Maureen Chiquet (the woman who heads Chanel is from Missouri!), Kara Walker, Nicole Kidman, the Nobel Women’s Initiative, Jane Goodall, Najood Ali (the 10 yr old Yemen girl who convinced the courts to give her a divorce from her adult husband), and Hillary Clinton (two standing ovations) was an excellent representation of just that. Also perhaps a reflection of the magazine’s pull, particularly in these tough times (Condi Rice said she’s been reading since she was twelve). Also, Cindi Leive rocked the most amazing shoes of the night, just saying.

-2.jpgThe star-studded event lived up to its glamour moniker (we joked on our way in that security was so tight it felt like the secret service was in the building…turns out they were!) and most of the recipients attended the packed dinner at the Essex House afterward — we spotted Nicole Kidman front and center with hubby Keith Urban, tiny Kate Bosworth floating about, and Harvey Weinstein “dropping in” on our way out. Later this twitter from Julia Allison turned us almost entirely green with envy. After the jump more highlights from the night as well as some vid of Hillary’s, Condi’s, and Tyra’s speeches (all of them mention their mothers). [UPDATE: The video is now working!]

Tyra Banks as Michelle Obama: The Photo Spread

obamabaza.pngThe rest of the Tyra Banks as (possible) First Lady Michelle Obama have been posted online.

Looking at the pics as a whole it becomes clear that the weirdness factor has nothing to do with Harper’s Bazaar running a Obamas as First Couple photo spread so much as their decision to use Tyra Banks in the role of First Lady. If they had, say, decided to cast the part of Michelle Obama using an anonymous model chances are we’d be discussing how the fashion photos perhaps signify that a black presidency (specifically an Obama one) has become culturally acceptable. However, by choosing Tyra — a cultural force in her own right — it feels like we’re merely watching “Ms. Banks” play out some weird personal fantasy of her own making. See the full slideshow here.

Tyra Banks Technically Not Covering Michelle Obama

tyra8508.jpgYesterday we wrote that Tyra Banks was (weirdly) set to appear on the cover of next month’s Harper’s Bazaar dressed as Michelle Obama. Apparently this was a bit of an exaggeration. Turns out Banks will appear on the cover as herself and dresses up as Michelle for a presidentially themed photo shoot inside, wherein she “pays homage to Michelle Obama and Jackie Kennedy with pearls, slinky black shift and curly flip, draped against a Barack Obama lookalike.” So slightly less weird, but only slightly. And since we’re on the subject, isn’t it time to put the JFK references to rest? Seriously, haven’t the Obamas accomplished more than enough to stand on their own without being propped up with Camelot imagery?

Meanwhile, the real Obamas are set to grace the cover of Essence, with an accompanying “upbeat” article penned by PBS newswoman (and favorite MTPer) Gwen Ifill.

Tyra Banks to Pose as Michelle Obama for Sept. Cover?

michtyra.pngThis is just plain weird. Page Six is reporting that Tyra Banks, a successful media mogul (or close to) in her own right is dressing up as Michelle Obama for the cover of next month’s Harper’s Bazaar. One wonders, is this because Bazaar was unable to get the real thing, or because Banks wants to take America’s Top Model to its most extreme conclusion. Whatever the reason it strikes us as the kind of weird plot point Hitchcock might have dreamed up were he alive and making a film about the modern day media world.

Project Strike a Pose: Vogue to Launch Reality Series

voguetv.pngBetter late than never. As Project Runway enters its fifth season and Tyra Banks continues her rise to world dominance, Vogue, the print bible for all things fashion, is finally getting in the reality show game. The online reality show game, that is.

According to WSJ, Vogue is launching Model.Live, a 12 part, reality-based web show that will air in eight-minute segments. The show will premiere, on demand, on Aug. 19 on Vogue.tv and be syndicated to Veoh.com and hulu.com and feature three hand-picked models, one of whom is described in the article as “coffee colored” so maybe Vogue is attempting to further embrace the whole diversity thing. The entire show is being underwritten by the bargain clothing company Express LLC., a somewhat ironic partnership since one wonders if anyone currently walking the hallowed Vogue halls has ever seen the inside of an Express store.

Tyra Gets Down, Talks Va-jay-jay

tbanks11.jpg

We don’t call this the Idiot Box for nothing. Tyra Banks dedicates her whole show on Monday to the vagina. From the press release:

Tyra begins the hour giving her audience a test to see if they can name all the parts of the vagina to unbelievable results – only 11% of her audience filled out the anatomical chart correctly.

Another segment features a field trip:

Having avoided the doctor for 28 years, Tyra takes a Plano, Texas woman, who happens to be a registered nurse, to her very first gynecological appointment.

We’re pretty sure the Texan, not Tyra, has avoided the steel stirrups but you get the idea.

Tyra makes it personal, too:

Tyra also shares with the audience the moment her mother gave her a hand mirror and told her to look at herself “down there.”

Unfortunately, Shonda Rhimes, the popularizer of vajayjay, isn’t a special speculum-toting guest.

We’re hoping Elizabeth Snead, who’s on The Dish Rag down there at the LA Times, will cover the show.

See You Next Tuesday Monday!

Tyra Banks Seals Deal with Warners, UnDead

21.jpg

Tyra Banks is expanding her brand. If that doesn’t send you screaming from the room, you must be a network exec. or a zombie. (See above.)

She’s got a deal with Warners Television to develop scripted television (as ANTM isn’t written, remember?) and more reality ventures with Warner Horizon. She will also move into film, working on direct-to-DVD projects for Warner Premiere including adaptations of the Clique series of teen novels which will be produced with Alloy Entertainment.

Just to make sure that she won’t die penniless, Tyra also has a series development pact with The CW, which is half-owned by Warner Bros. which includes both scripted and non-scripted projects. Laura Armstrong is joining Bankable as VP/Development and Production and Bradford Sisk moves up to to VP/Production.

FBLA wants to like Tyra, but face it, she’s in need of a good long rest. Her treatment of Ebony on ANTM was dreadful.

Things Get Hairy on Tyra Banks Show

Tyra Banks and Molly Sims emulate Molly’s new co-star Tom Selleck. Molly confesses, “I like a bit of facial hair.”

Since when did these two start looking so much alike?
