BlackBook Sold to Founder

BlackBook magazine is going back home. According to the New York Observer, Vibe Holdings has sold the magazine back to Evanly Schindler, who found the publication all the way back in 1996.

The magazine’s other owner is Jon Bond, who currently serves as “chief tomorroist” (yes, we’re serious) for Tomorro LLC, a marketing company. Despite that cool title, Bond is more well known as the founder of Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners.

The sale involved several other investors, including Steve Zacks, Aaron Hicklin and Bill Powers (former BlackBook editors), Jamie Driver, Mogility Capital and Picture Farm Productions.

Financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Len Burnett Buys Back Uptown

Uptown is going back to its roots. According to The New York Post, Len Burnett — a co-founder of Uptown — has bought the title back from Vibe Holdings, which acquired it in 2011.

Burnett, who had been co-CEO of Uptown Media Group and chief revenue officer of Vibe Holdings, will separate from Vibe to concentrate on Uptown. He has already appointed Isoul Harris as the magazine’s new editor-in-chief. Uptown’s former editor, Angela Bronner Helm, left early this month.

Burnett didn’t say how much he paid for the magazine, only that “They [Vibe Holdings] just wanted to put more emphasis on Vibe and the digital portion, and they gave us the opportunity to buy back Uptown.”

Ron Burkle, Magic Johnson Acquire BlackBook Media

Ron Burkle and Magic Johnson have teamed up once again, this time to acquire BlackBook Media. Last February the duo purchased Vibe Holdings, a deal that saw Johnson becoming the Chairman of the company.

The New York Post reports that an enticing part of the BlackBook acquisition was Access Network, a software division of BlackBook Media. The software is used by a variety of companies for listing services.

BlackBook Media will be combined with Vibe Holdings, with Ari Horowitz operating as its CEO.
