Vice Acquires British Style Magazine i-D

Vice has purchased i-D, a British fashion and style magazine. Terry Jones and Tricia Jones, the co-founders of i-D, will remain minority partners. Vice also plans to keep the staffers currently employed at i-D and increase the magazine’s print circulation.

Vice sought out the style magazine because it felt the two brands complimented each other. “Vice is so excited to work with the guys at i-D magazine, one of the only fashion publications in the world we actually respect,” said Andrew Creighton, Vice’s president, in a statement. “We know digital, i-D knows style, and together we’re going to give the world the gift of eye-catching, mind-blowing video-driven fashion content.”

“Working with Vice means partnering with a company that knows how to expand from print to digital in a smart way,” added Terry Jones. “There’s a huge void in video-driven fashion channels and this partnership will fill and dominate that void.”

Cover Battle: The New Yorker or Vice

Welcome back to FishbowlNY’s weekly Cover Battle. This week we have The New Yorker versus Vice. The New Yorker features Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan doing things that best buddies do, like work on cars without their shirts on. We’re not sold on the duo quite yet, but they do stand a chance of being our favorite bromance since Brody Jenner and Justin Bobby.

Vice Hires José Canseco as Columnist Because He’s Smart

Vice, in an apparent desperation move to garner page views, has hired José Canseco as a new columnist. Canseco will write a weekly feature titled “José Can Say So,” which sort of rhymes with his name, so that’s nice.

In his first article, Canseco takes on the Aurora, Colorado tragedy. His brilliant idea to stop something like that from happening again? More guns:

I guarantee that if four or five or six people had guns on them in that theater, either that kid would never have gone in there, or he would have gotten blown away. That’s just the way it is. I think you have to send a message to the criminals: ‘No no no no no, you think you’ve got a gun? I’ve got a bigger gun. I’ve got two guns on you.’ It’s simple psychology, really.

Raise your hand if you think he got this idea from Crocodile Dundee.

Vice Media Seeks Expansion

Vice Media Group wants to expand its already large empire, and to do so, has enlisted a little help from some big friends. According to The New York Times, the company is about to announce three new investors – Tom Freston, one of the founders of MTV, the media giant WPP, and the investment firm Raine Group – that will help it grow.

The sum of the investment is reportedly in the high eight figures, and is going to aide with additional international expansion, as well as increased news and sports coverage.

Vice already employs over 700 people across dozens of countries, so constantly expanding might threaten the brand image. Freston says he isn’t worried about that happening at Vice:

I do believe their business is at a scale where it can sizably increase without them having to be some sellout, oversized corporate machine, which is what you see so often. I think they can keep their own peculiar way.

We definitely don’t associate Vice with news or sports, but maybe with that kind of money being pumped in, the company can change that train of thought. It’s going to need a good conductor to make that happen.

Glamour Continues In Plus-Sized Trend

While Glamour may have come out with several plus-sized spreads, it also incited some controversy over not having their bigger models wearing any clothes. (>Update: the November shoot was a reenactment of the famed Herb Ritts photo of naked supermodels.) It was really V magazine‘s recent plus-sized issue that garnered praise for utilizing its models to the fullest extent, even when yes…a lot of their larger babes weren’t wearing shirts either.

Today Glamour <s>tries to take back their title</s> continues its trend as the most size-friendly fashion magazine by scooping a little of V‘s glory: the Condé Nast title’s newest issue features a spread with plus-size model Crystal Renn, most recently seen in V‘s “Who Wears It Better” spread, where she was photographed by Vice photographer Terry Richardson.

While we applaud Glamour‘s consistent use of a plus-sized woman in its pages, we’d love to see more of the other models out there besides Renn. We’re sure there’s plenty.

V Magazine Navigates Minefield Of Plus-Sized Models

When a magazine tackles issues of “sizes” in models, it can be a tricky situation. Like when Glamour put out a spread of naked plus-sized models and critics complained that the women weren’t clothed, thus making their belly rolls and thicker thighs more evident. And even though the fashion industry has promised tighter regulations on keeping models closer to normal, human sizes instead of wire hangers, nothing much has changed. One step forward, two steps back.

So when V magazine hired American Apparel/Vice photographer Terry Richardson to take pictures of “skinny” model Jacquelyn Jablonski next to “plus-sized” model Crystal Renn for a “Who Wears It Better” spread, we expected to hear the same sort of complaints about the smaller women being portrayed as more attractive than the bigger one, since most fashion designers make their outfits with tiny girls in mind.

But here’s the twist: both girls look exactly the same. At first, we thought they were actually the same woman, with a little bit of photoshopping to make one picture look a little bit larger than the other. As it turns out, both models are the same height (5’9″) and Renn’s measurements are 36-31-41, which is only three inches above the “ideal” waistline for a woman her height.

So if V had shown a bigger woman to compare to Jablonski, they may have gotten crap for accentuating how clothes fit skinny girls better, but by using only a slightly plus-sized model, the magazine is saying that even the term “plus-size” doesn’t really apply to most women in America.

Pictures of the photo shoot, after the jump.

You Don’t Call, You Don’t Write, And When You Do It’s Boring

The saying goes, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Well, according to Vice, if you don’t have anything interesting to say, they won’t print it. And apparently no one has anything interesting or edifying to contribute these days because the Brooklyn-based magazine has canceled their letters page entirely.
You know what? No letters page this month…You know why? Because we aren’t receiving enough real letters. We mainly get emails now, and people don’t think when they write emails.
Ha. A pox on the commentariat! Actually we can’t remember the last time we wrote an actual letter, though we’ve noticed a disturbing tendency recently to include html codes in our hand-written notes. Of course, the Vice people posted all this online, including a call to readers “who still have most of your fingers and know how to hold a pen, to send us actual, tangible letters.” So basically, do as we say, not as we do.

The Dogs Days of Summer: Not Hot Enough For You?

We’re not entirely sure how it’s only Thursday today and not Friday — probably some evil plan concocted by NBC to fool the entire country in order to make more money off the Olympics. Anyway, it’s August, and as much as we love gazing at Michael Phelps we need a break. To that end we bring you an entirely new sporting event, as exhibited by Gavin Miles McInnes, former Vice founder and currently one half of StreetCarnage.com. In our minds this is nothing less than an Olympian feat, and possibly should be considered as a future event. Synchronized pepper eating anyone?
