Vikki Vargas Honored with Philanthropy Award

NBC4′s Orange County Bureau chief Vikki Vargas received the 2011 General William Lyon Crystal Vision Philanthropy Award from the Orangewood Children’s Foundation Thursday afternoon.

The award is given to individuals who have given his or her time and resources and who reflects the unending commitment to Orange County children.

Vargas, who has served on Orangewood’s Board of Directors since 1996,  is just the ninth recipient of the award.

“Vikki has a true passion for our kids. She has been an active and respected member of our board and deeply admired by the staff and college students,” said Cal Winslow, chief executive officer of Orangewood Children’s Foundation said in a statement. “She was a natural selection for this award and we are proud to honor her for the many years of service and the accomplishments she has achieved on behalf of the organization.”

Fundraiser Tonight For The Latino Journalists of California

The CCNMA is having an event tonight hosted by Ruben Martinez to raise funds for scholarships and to help keep CCNMA going. There will be wine tasting, appetizers, live classical guitar, and an auction of autographed books and artwork.

The “friends” of Martinez include Augustin Gurza (ex-Los Angeles Times), Sid Garcia (ABC7), Luz Villareal (Dateline NBC associate producer), Yvette Cabrera (Orange County Register columnist), Vikki Vargas (NBC4 Orange County bureau chief), Louis Sahagun (Los Angeles Times), Josefina Lopez (author, Real Women Have Curves) and Soledad St. Hilaire (actress).
