WFAN Original John Minko ‘Didn’t Know What to Expect’ When Station Started 25 Years Ago

Our special series marking WFAN’s silver anniversary cannot overlook John Minko. His distinct voice is one of only three from the on-air talent pool that has thrived at the all-sports station for 25 years. The other two are Steve Somers and Ed Coleman.

“I’m the original update person on the weekends from midnight til 6, and also was on the street [reporting] for three days during the week,” Minko tells FishbowlNY, moments before returning to the studio for another live sports report.

During the 2000s, Minko was the radio play-by-play man for Army football on WABC and WFAN’s top rival WEPN/(then ESPN 1050).

These days Minko, 59, is one of the station’s main update anchors, handling the afternoon slot, including for Mike Francesa‘s show, which is simulcast on the YES Network.

But with his quarter-century logged at the ‘FAN, Minko is also an unofficial station historian.

“I remember everybody’s schedule on air from the very beginning,” Minko says. “Every single person.”

Cumulus Changes: John Foxx Gets WPLJ PD Gig; Jeff Miles Leaves Middays

It’s a busy day in the Cumulus neighborhood. Several reports indicate John Foxx is about to land at WPLJ as program director. What that means for the legendary programmer, Scott Shannon, is unclear. But All Access says Foxx will work “alongside” Shannon. But there’s no explanation as to whether Foxx will be an equal to Shannon or if, in fact, he’ll become Shannon’s boss.

Shannon, who turns 65 this year, celebrated 20 years in the morning with Todd Pettengill in 2011.

Foxx, who had worked for sister station KLIF in Dallas, joins WPLJ July 9th. WPLJ operations manager Tony Mascaro adds the same title with WABC

Shannon promoted Mascaro to operations manager in 2010 after his 13-year stint as music director.

In other WPLJ news, midday jock Jeff Miles is said to be leaving for an undisclosed Cumulus property. That announcement will be made later this month.

Hal Jackson, Black Radio Legend, Dies at 96

Webster’s defines an icon as “any person or thing that is revered.”

That was Hal Jackson. The pioneering WBLS radio personality died yesterday at age 96. His cause of death was not released, but Jackson had a short illness.

Jackson maintained his Sunday Classics show, on the air as recently as a couple of weeks ago. He hosted the program with Clay Berry and Deborah Bolling Jackson, known to listeners as Debi B., or simply Jackson’s wife for 23 years.

“He was a big proponent of passing [information],” Skip Dillard, WBLS
program director, tells FishbowlNY. “I think that was one of his greatest assets.”

He co-founded WBLS original parent company, Inner City Broadcasting in 1971 with the late Percy Sutton, giving a new outlet to African-Americans. It was the first owned and operated African-American station in New York.

“He really is responsible for us being here today, because he encouraged Mr. Sutton to go through with the purchase of WLIB-FM at a time when AM was king,” Dillard says. “Hal really was a little ahead of his time and saw the potential for radio, and always believed that radio could grow and evolve.”

Last year, Inner City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

WLTW Opens Big Lead Over WCBS-FM in December Ratings

WLTW/Lite FM keeps a tight grip on number one in the overall Arbitron PPM ratings. WLTW increased its lead over perennial number two WCBS-FM in December. WLTW edged WCBS-FM by just .3 in November, but WLTW had a 8.2 this month, gaining a 2.3 advantage over CBS-FM.

Clear Channel’s WHTZ/Z100 maintains number three with a 5.1 for the second straight month. WKTU slipped from 5.0 to 4.8, while sister station WAXQ also lost .2 to 4.1.

CBS’ WWFS/Fresh 102.7 saw gains, jumping .3 to 3.9.

Tropical station WSKQ had a minimal improvement to 3.9.

Cumulus’ WABC had .2 increase to 3.7.

WINS saw a slight drop to 3.4, while WCBS-AM lost .2 to 2.8.

FM Newser 101.9/WEMP had no gains from the previous rating survey, holding steady at .6.

More ratings highlights after the jump.

Alleged Killer of Former WABC Newsman George Weber Convicted of Murder

John Katehis was convicted yesterday of murdering former WABC-AM newsman George Weber, and could get up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced December 7.

This jury came back within a day. The first trial ended in a mistrial last year, as the jury was deadlocked after several days of deliberations.

The defense argued that Weber, who was working for ABC News Radio at the time of his death, had lured the teenager to his home for sex and given him liquor and cocaine.

Weber had been stabbed an estimated 50 times with a knife in 2009. Katehis, 19, claimed self-defense but a jury in Broooklyn agreed with prosecutors that the stabbings were instead murder.

Ousted WOR Talker Steve Malzberg Appears With The Apple’s Curtis Sliwa Today

It’s been five weeks since WOR Radio opted to replace controversial afternoon host Steve Malzberg with former Governor David Paterson.

This morning, Malzberg fans can get their fix as he guests with former WABC colleague Curtis Sliwa on the Apple/970 WNYM. He’s scheduled to appear at 7:25 a.m.

“I love Curtis and I am so thrilled that he has reached out to me,” Malzberg tells FishbowlNY. “This should be a lot of fun.”

Since leaving WOR, Malzberg has made some fill-in hosting appearances at KLIF in Dallas. The staunch right-winger also just signed with the Garden State Journal as the paper’s leading local columnist. The new online and print newspapers launches November 15th. (See commercial with Malzberg below).

As for the possibility of getting a regular role at The Apple, a succinct Malzberg says, “We are talking to all who will listen!”

WLTW Stays on Top, WKTU Pulls Closer in September

The September PPM ratings were just released by Arbitron. WLTW/Lite FM maintain number one, but there’s a rare logjam at the top.

While no loss to the cume (average listenership), WLTW did see the overall rating drop off. Clear Channel’s Soft Adult Contemporary juggernaut slipped from a 6.2 in August to 5.8.

The steady rise of sister station WKTU is almost complete. The Dance station improved from a 5.2 to 5.6.

No gain for WCBS-FM at 5.4, but now as a third-place radio station.

Z100/WHTZ trended backwards from a 5.1 to 4.9.

However, WINS made the biggest gains of the month, a full point to 4.2.

Rocker WAXQ/Q 104.3 was steady as she goes, joining WINS with a 4.2.

As the Yankees made a playoffs push, WCBS-AM took a .2 advantage to 4.1.

More highlights from the radio ratings after the jump.

Steve Malzberg Out at WOR, Replaced by Former Governor David Paterson

The tenure of conversative talker Steve Malzberg at WOR Radio is over. Malzberg was replaced today by former New York Governor David Paterson.

Starting next week, Paterson will take over the 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. slot in New York and across the country on the WOR Radio Network.

“When he started filling in, I think [WOR managment] they fell in love with him,” Malzberg tells FishbowlNY. “[Paterson] impressed a lot of people.”

Fred Imus, Brother of Don Imus, Dies at 69

He’s been a staple of his older brother’s radio show for years, but Fred Imus had much more to his life.

Fred was a cohost on Sirius’ weekend show Fred’s Trailer Park Bash. Reportedly he was found dead Saturday in his Tucson, Arizona trailer after he failed to show up for the Sirius show.

The longtime country music songwriter reached the pinnacle of that career in 1976. That year he and Phil Sweet co-wrote I Dont Want to Have to Marry You, a number-one country hit for Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius.

Fred and Don Imus collaborated on a book in 1997 Two Guys Four Corners, which gave insight to the Imus’ love for the Southwest.

But, of course, his biggest recognition was as a contributor to Don’s morning show, now on WABC-AM.

WLTW Keeps Number One, WCBS-FM Returns to Number Two

Perennial top rated Soft Adult Contemporary WLTW/Lite FM maintains its stranglehold on number one in the latest Arbitron ratings.

Clear Channel’s WLTW remained at 6.6 for a second straight month, but rival WCBS-FM battled back from a third-place tie.

“Competition is getting tighter, so we are very pleased to see CBS-FM bounce back with a 10 percent gain at number two,” Brian Thomas, WCBS-FM program director, tells FishbowlNY.

CBS-FM improves from a 4.9 to a 5.4 and sole possession of second place.

Thomas says the rumored changes for 101.9 will “most likely benefit WAXQ and WCBS-FM the most.”

Meanwhile, WKTU makes gains from last month’s 4.9, but grabs number three at 5.1.

WHTZ/Z100 keeps pace for the second consecutive survey with a 5.0.

Tropical favorite WSKQ continues to jump by leaps and bounds. ‘SKQ added .6 since April (including .3 last month).

Classic rock station WAXQ/104.3 had a slight upgrade to 4.1 for June.

WCBS-AM, despite carrying the New York Yankees, has been on a ratings freefall. After dropping .7 for May, the All-News station gave back another .3 for June.

More from the radio ratings after the jump

A Golden Anniversary for the Top 40 Gold Standard–Dan Ingram Joined WABC 50 Years Ago This Weekend

While most people celebrated the nation’s 235th birthday, quickly a radio icon marked a milestone over the weekend.

Dan Ingram is widely considered the greatest Top 40 DJ of all-time. That’s the consensus of critics, fellow broadcasters, and most important—listeners.

For the 40-something crowd and older, Ingram was appointment radio each afternoon on 77 WABC. He took fans through the heyday of Musicradio in the 1960s and 1970s, and stayed with the station until the music died in 1982. (He and dear friend and colleague Ron Lundy were the last voices heard before WABC flipped to talk radio.)

While being raised in Brooklyn, Charles Hollon idolized Big Dan. Even though Hollon, 42, isn’t in the business, Ingram made an impact on his life.

“For an only child growing up in Bensonhurst, the small toot-a-loop radio that was won on Wonderama, was his world,” Hollon says. “The guy who came on everyday at 2 p.m. with some odd drum-based music that he spoke over was a must.”

After stints at big-time rockers KBOX in Dallas and WIL in St. Louis, the Oceanside, New York native and Hofstra graduate was hired by WABC and the Dan Ingram Show was born on July 3, 1961. (Ingram began filling-in three days earlier)

WABC-AM’s John Batchelor Visits Poland This Week

The John Batchelor Show, broadcast nationally from WABC-AM, headed to Poland for special shows on Sunday and Monday night. As Batchelor wrote on his website, he arrived “to attend the annual March of the Living that commemorates the Holocaust and the liquidation of the Krakow Jews.”

Of course, by Sunday night, there was only one topic on everyone’s mind–the death of Osama Bin Laden.

“The parallels are striking, as John and his guests eloquently reminded us,” Laurie Cantillo, WABC program director, tells FishbowlNY. ”There is still much evil in the world, and we need to be vigilant and informed through thoughtful programs like this.”

WLTW Widens Lead Over WCBS-FM in March Ratings

WLTW/Lite FM has been an unstoppable force atop the Arbitron monthly PPM overall 6+ rating. The Clear Channel juggernaut is a consistent number one to WCBS-FM’s long-standing number two.

That formula is followed again last month, except that Lite increased its lead over the Classic Hits station.

Lite went from a 7.1 to a 7.6 in March, while CBS-FM, in the oppposite direction, slipped from 5.6 to 5.4.

Z100/WHTZ kept its familiar number three, although also dropping off from 5.3 to 5.1.

It was steady as she goes for Rhythmic Adult Contemporary WKTU (the third Clear Channel station among the Top 4) at a 4.7.

However, Spanish station WSKQ/Mega 97.9 made big gains, jumping from 3.5 to 4.1.

WBLS and WCBS-AM saw no movement in March, both holding at 3.7.

More from the Top 10 after the jump

No Changes Atop the February PPM Ratings: WLTW Maintains Lead; WCBS-FM is Second

WLTW/Lite FM remains the one to beat in the overall (6+ continuous) February PPM Arbitron ratings. The Clear Channel number one mainstay had a 7.1 (up from 6.8 in January). WCBS-FM kept its usual distance at number two, although the Classic Hits station did edge up to a 5.6.

WHTZ/Z100 maintained number three. But the Clear Channel Contemporary Hit Radio station powered up .6 from the previous month to stand at 5.3.

WKTU, also had a big month, moving up to fourth place with a 4.7.

WINS slipped back to 3.8 (from 4.2 in January), while Citadel’s WABC had no gain for the month at 3.7. Joining WABC at 3.7 was WCBS-AM, which had a down February–losing .7.

More of the ratings after the jump.
