Walking Dead Climbs to Number One for First Time in New York

AMC’s Walking Dead had the rare feat–number one for the week. The horror drama actually tied for the top spot in Nielsen’s New York prime time ratings with CBS’ The Big Bang Theory.

The shows averaged 961,000 viewers and a 4.9 rating.

American Idol occupied the next two positions. There were 904,000 WNYW viewers and a 4.6 rating for a third-place showing of the Thursday night results. Idol‘s performance night was fourth with an estimated 872,000 fans and a 4.4 rating.

Person of Interest was next at number five (844,000/4.3), while CBS was also represented by NCIS at six (805,000/4.1). It tied with ABC’s Bachelor: After the Rose (800,000/4,1). The two-hour Bachelor finale tied for 10th (699,000/3.6).

WNBC had just one Top 3o entry, Celebrity Apprentice at number 18 with 539,000 Channel 4 viewers and a 2.7 rating.

The latest episode of History’s The Bible notched 475,000 viewers and a 2.4 rating.

NCIS Again Keeps Idol From Top of Weekly Prime Time Ratings

It’s possibly American Idol fatigue, but the dominance of Fox’s talent showcase has been slipping this season in New York. CBS’ NCIS took the top spot for the week with an estimated 1.1 million WCBS viewers and a 5.9 rating, according to Nielsen.

As for Idol, the Thursday night show grabbed number two with 961,000 people tuned to WNYW and a 4.9 rating. The Wednesday performance tied for fifth with 927,000 viewers and a 4.7 rating. That led to the Fox 5 News at 10 scoring with viewers. The Steve Lacy/Dari Alexander newscast tied for 18th (570,000/2.9).

Idol added a 10th-place result (779,000/4.0) for the Tuesday night edition.

Also in fifth place were 60 Minutes (931,000) and Person of Interest (914,000).

Big Bang Theory (947,000/4.8) and AMC’s Walking Dead (932,000) tied for third.

WABC made its first appearance in the Top 30 with Revenge at 13 (641,000/3.3). Struggling NBC was represented only by Celebrity Apprentice, which tied for number 29 (487,000/2.5).

There’s more from the Top 10 after the jump.

NCIS Takes Weekly Top Spot; Idol Settles for Second

OK, it may not be time to cue up Dylan’s, The Times They Are A Changin,’ but there is a change at the top. American Idol was caught by CBS drama NCIS for number one in the prime time weekly survey. It had an estimated 1.1 million WCBS viewers, while Fox’s Idol landed at number two with 1 million fans on WNYW, according to Nielsen.

With that lead-in the Fox 5 News at 10 with Steve Lacy and Dari Alexander with number 24 (523,000/2.7).

The Thursday edition of Idol took fourth place for the week with 888,000 viewers and a 4.5 rating.

Modern Family wedged itself at number three with (985,000/5.0).

AMC’s Walking Dead was next at five (859,000/4.4), while 60 Minutes took hold of sixth (824,000/4.2).

WNBC’s first appearance in the weekly Top 30 was 20th with Law & Order: SVU (577,000/2.9).

The debut of History’s The Bible miniseries was 17th (589,000/3.0).

WABC-TV Investigative Reporter Sarah Wallace Gets Big Exclusive

The word exclusive may need to be retired from TV newsrooms after WABC/Channel 7′s use last night. The words of anchor Bill Ritter said it best, “New York cops can’t find him, but we did.”

WABC investigative reporter Sarah Wallace found Julio Acevedo, who the NYPD has been on a manhunt for since leaving the scene of a car crash that killed a young Orthodox Jewish couple in Williamsburg. The interview was coordinated through Acevedo’s former cellmate friend.

The story resonated further with the city. The couple was en route to the hospital early Sunday to deliver her baby. The newborn survived for one night after an emergency c-section on the dead mother.

Acevedo told Wallace via cell phone that “My heart goes out to all of those people. I was feeling like I’m just so much of a bad guy.”

Acevedo admitted to speeding because he claims to have been shot a short time earlier.

“That cab driver came out of nowhere. I couldn’t stop.”

Jim Dolan was the reporter to package the story last night. Given the tremendous get for Wallace we won’t come down on Dolan for wrapping up live from Williamsburg with a double negative.

“…Not turning himself into police is not helping his case any.”

WABC Claims February Sweeps Victory

WABC/Channel 7 heads into March following a successful February sweeps period. The station won early and late, starting with Eyewitness News This Morning and ending with the 11 p.m. newscast.

In every daypart, WABC was tops among households and the all-important adults 25 to 54 demographic.

The Bill Ritter-Sade Baderinwa broadcast scored a 6.3 household rating, the highest for any 11 p.m. newscast in a major sweep in nearly four years, the station says.

WCBS/Channel 2, though, was pleased with its February performance.

Its late news, anchored by Maurice DuBois and Kristine Johnson, had an average of 511,000,
the station’s largest 11 p.m. audience during a major sweep period since November 2010 and best February sweep performance since 2005, a station spokesperson says.

The station also saw year-to-year gains at 5 and 6 p.m.

If the final day of the sweeps period is any indication, WNBC came in third among noon newscasts in the 25 to 54 demo and households.

At 5 p.m., WNBC only beat WNYW and WPIX. The same applies for Channel 4 at 6 p.m. (minus a WPIX newscast).

However, thanks to the Ellen lead-in, WNBC may have notched a slight victory in the adults 25 to 54 demo at 5 p.m.

WNBC was third at 11 p.m.

Oscar Night Gives Golden Week to WABC

insidemovies.ew.com

As the sweeps period ends today, WABC/Channel 7 had an easy win leading up to the February ratings block. The prime time figures were released today and WABC/Channel 7 rode the Oscars to victory.

Although the approximately three-hour 45- minute broadcast didn’t end until about 12:15 a.m., enough eyes were glued to Seth MacFarlane‘s first time as emcee. The telecast had an estimated 4 million WABC viewers with a 20.6 rating, according to Nielsen.

But it didn’t stop there. WABC also found Oscar gold in the 90-minute Red Carpet special, notching number two, three, and four in half-hour intervals. The highest portion, obviously, was just prior to the awards show starting with 2.9 million viewers and a 14.7 rating. Cable network E! also charted at number 22 for its Red Carpet coverage Sunday (618,000/3.2).

NCIS was fifth for the week with 1 million viewers and a 5.2 rating.

WNBC made its first appearance in the Top 30 with Law & Order: SVU at 27 (592,000/3.0).

There more from Top 10 after the jump.

Reporters to Converge on Vatican City for Election of New Pope

Pope Benedict made the unprecedented decision to retire. It’s the first time since 1415 that a pope has resigned. It’s a busy time at the Vatican. Benedict will make his final appearance was pope Thursday, before the conclave of cardinals pick his successor.

With the even the slightest hint that New York’s own Cardinal Dolan, dare we say it, could become the next pope, starions are flocking to wait for the puff of smoke.

Among the stations sending correspondents is WCBS/Channel 2 as reporter Tony Aiello spends the rest of week Rome.

WNBC/Channel 4 will send anchor David Ushery, who previously covered the pope, returns to the Vatican for the Conclave of Cardinals that is expected to start next week.

WABC/Channel 7 weekend anchor Joe Torres will be in Rome. The station could not confirm, though, when he will begin to file reports.

On radio, veteran reporter Rich Lamb will make his way to Rome early next week for the Conclave.

WINS is sending Juliet Papa to cover the events at the Sistine Chapel. News director Ben Mevorach tells FishbowlNY, “She has traveled to Rome to cover the Pope on several other occasions for us, so she is well prepared and will bring listeners a very experienced perspective.”

Update: WPIX is sending to reporters Dan Mannarino and Mary Murphy, according to a tweet by Mannarino.

NY1 reporter Vivian Lee is headed to Rome. She’ll cover the papal resignation Thursday. Lee will resume daily updates Sunday as the cardinals hold their Conclave to select the next pope.

The Super Bowl and Grammys are long over. The Oscars are coming up this weekend. So, for now, it’s back to “normal” atop the weekly prime time ratings. Fox’s American Idol led the way with the top two programs for the week.

The Wednesday night Idol had an estimated 990,000 viewers on WNYW/Channel 5 with a 5.0 rating, according to Nielsen. The following night’s Idol registered 953,000 viewers and a 4.9 rating.

The NBA All-Star Game on TNT had a third-place finish with a 926,000 fans and a 4.7 rating. TNT’s coverage of the always entertaining All-Star Saturday night tied for eighth (807,000/4.1).

The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family also tied for third.

WNBC had just one appearance in the Top 30 with Law & Order: SVU at 27 (536,000/2.7).

PBS’ Downton Abbey finished in a 20th-place tie (570,000/2.9).

There’s more from the Top 10 after the jump.

Former Anchor Rob Morrison Faces ‘Very Serious Blow to His Career’: Legal Expert

With the local media swirling like vultures for the latest morsel in the case against resigned WCBS anchor Rob Morrison, FishbowlNY turns to attorney Paul Callan, who represented former WABC weather anchor Heidi Jones during her scandal last year.

She eventually was fired for falsifying a sexual assault. We spoke to Callan yesterday, hours before Morrison announced his resignation.

Related: FishbowlNY, Morrison Resigns From WCBS Amid Wife Choking Allegations

Morrison was arrested Sunday on a felonious charge of choking his wife, Ashley Morrison during a fight at their home early Sunday morning. A judge ordered Morrison to stay 100 yards away from his wife.

“There have been indications that his wife wants to drop the charges, so ultimately this will be a decision by the Connecticut prosecutor as to whether to try to informally resolve the case with a dismissal,” Callan tells FishbowlNY.

That doesn’t automatically mean Morrison will be cleared.

“Prosecutors can serve a subpoena on her. They can force her to testify under oath,” Callan says. “Sometimes the wife is placed in a difficult position as she tries to deny the charge.”

Grammy Awards Give WCBS Another Week to Shine

Call it a “one-two punch.” WCBS/Channel 2 took the top weekly honors from the annual Grammy Awards Sunday night. The telecast (one week after CBS’ telecast of the Super Bowl) had an estimated 2.8 million viewers and a 14.6 rating, according to Nielsen.

In all, seven CBS programs packed the Top 10. At number two was NCIS with 1.2 million viewers and a 6.4 rating, while Big Bang Theory tied for third with AMC’s Breaking Bad, (1 million/5.2 rating.)

ABC’s Modern Family was fifth (985,000/5.0). The Wednesday night edition of American Idol on WNYW tied for seventh (908,000/4.6). The Thursday installment was 11th for the week (858,000/4.4).

The latest episode of PBS’ Downton Abbey on WNET was 14th (734,000/3.7). WNBC had no entries in the Top 30. More from the Top 10 after the jump…

Stations Begin Storm Mode as Blizzard Closes In

Let the hunkering begin!

With a blizzard warning blanketing New York, area stations are treating the impending storm with necessary seriousness.

This afternoon, ahead of the snow, WCBS started its wall-to-wall coverage. Anchors Maurice DuBois and Kristine Johnson led the team into action at 3 p.m., with reporters stationed throughout the tri-state area. Joining Lonnie Quinn in the “Weather Center” was John Elliott, who was seen shoveling the icy, snowy mix on the roof. A WCBS spokesperson tells FishbowlNY that the same group will be in place starting tomorrow at 6 a.m.

WABC also got a 3 p.m start with Bill Ritter and Lori Stokes at the desk. Weekend meteorologist Jeff Smith assisted Lee Goldberg.

WNYW did not offer extended coverage until its 5 p.m. newscast. Channel 5 did give viewers hourly updates with Nick Gregory. Sister station WWOR also broke in for top-of-the-hour reports with Audrey Puente. Channel 9, like most stations, ran a live press conference by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at 3:45. Harry Martin briefly did a recap. WNYW skipped the governor’s news conference to stay with The People’s Court.

WNBC ended the Christie remarks from Trenton by sequeing into the start of its “Severe Weather Coverage” at 4 with Tom Llamas and Shiba Russell.

NY1 and NY1 Noticias were in non-stop mode for the blizzard. On Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m., NY1 will present a special half hour with the latest storm information.

Award season is in full swing! It culminates with the Oscars later this month. But not so fast. The New York Emmy Awards announced its nominations today.

MSG Network leads the pack with 67 nominations. WNBC has the most among over-the-air outlets with 58 nominations.

There are dozens of award categories and here’s a brief rundown…

WCBS’ Chris Wragge, a multiple winner, has been nominated for Best Evening Newscast (under 35 minutes). He was tapped for anchoring the East River helicopter crash in October, 2011. He also received three other nominations, including coverage of a sportscast/series for the Giants Road to Super Bowl 46. He is also a nominee for the prestigious Best Anchor.

Among those joining Wragge in that category are WABC weekend morning anchor Phil Lipof, Tom Llamas of WNBC, and Sukanya Krishnan from WPIX.

Veteran WNBC anchor Chuck Scarborough is in the running for the News Special category, hosting a 9/11 10th anniversary broadcast.

McDonalds Holds Annual Black Media Legends Gala

As the calendar flipped to February, it became Black History Month. For the annual honor, the tri-state McDonalds restaurants select Black Media Legends and Trailblazers. Each year they are showcased on the place mats of customers’ trays.

This year, the lunchtime event moved from the Waldorf Astoria to the Plaza Hotel.

The 18 people are standouts in their fields (TV, radio, and newspapers). But this was all about the great WNBC anchor Sue Simmons, who stepped down last June.

Most of the presenters and award winners mentioned Simmons in their speeches, or ad libbed, due to her remarkable career and presence.

Ironically, John Noel, a reporter with WNBC since 1998, never mentioned Sue’s name in accepting his trophy. FishbowlNY did speak to Noel, a Brooklyn native, about sharing this year’s class with his former colleague.

“If you’re going to call anybody a legend in the media here in New York City, clearly she qualifies for the title,” Noel says. “She’s known and loved by millions of people in the metropolitan area. Much of what she’s done on the air remains legendary.”

The full list of winners after the jump

Bill Parcells ‘Better Than Good’, As Pro Football Hall of Fame Calls

Is it the two Super Bowl rings? The nine NFL seasons with at least 10 wins? The playoff consistency with eight divisional NFC East titles? Whatever the formula, Bill Parcells was officially recognized as one of the league’s all-time great coaches, selected for induction this summer in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Parcells had a 22-year career patrolling the sidelines, half of that was leading the New York Giants. Scott Clark was at WABC-TV for much the Parcells run in East Rutherford, New Jersey, including victories in Super Bowl XXI and XXV.

“[His] record speaks for itself, and to that end, I remember him many times saying, ‘It is what it is fellas. You are what you are.’”

Parcells will join a couple of his former Giants defensive players for enshrinement–Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson.

Before coming to New York, Clark covered another eventual Hall of Fame coach, Joe Gibbs of the Washington Redskins.

“Gibbs and Parcells were vastly different personalities, but they shared similar traits,” Clark tells FishbowlNY. “They out worked everybody else, 24/7. [There were] cots in the office, living, eating, breathing their respective jobs.”

American Idol Returns and Brings Winning Ratings to WNYW

The 11th season of American Idol is showing renewed life after subtracting judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, and adding Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, and Nikki Minaj. The show’s only carryovers are Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest.

Last week’s meandering from city to city for auditions took the top spot for the week and number two.

The Wednesday night, two-hour Idol had an estimated 1.2 million WNYW viewers, according to Nielsen, with a 6.5 rating. The Thursday installment tied for second best with 1 million fans and a 5.4 rating.

It was deadlocked with 60 Minutes on WCBS and Modern Family on WABC.

A pair of CBS Monday night comedies were next. How I Met Your Mother was fifth (898,000/4.6), while 2 Broke Girls was number six (869,000/4.4).

There’s more from the Top 10 after the jump.
