2014 Pulitzer Prizes Announced (FishbowlNY)
The Pulitzer Prizes celebrate the best of the best, and Monday we learned the latest recipients of journalism’s highest honor. TVNewser The Washington Post and the U.S. edition of The Guardian have won the award. They will share the Public Service award for their series of stories on NSA surveillance, as revealed by Edward Snowden, an NSA contractor who gave the top-secret information to the news organizations. The Pulitzer committee said the journalism was “marked by authoritative and insightful reports that helped the public understand how the disclosures fit into the larger framework of national security.” Politico Snowden immediately declared the decision “a vindication.” The reporting on the former government contractor’s leaks was led by journalists Glenn Greenwald and Ewan McAskill at The Guardian, Barton Gellman at the Post, and Laura Poitras, who worked with both newspapers. NYT The Boston Globe won the breaking news prize for its coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and wounded at least 260. The Post won a second award, for explanatory journalism. Eli Saslow, 31, a staff writer, won for a series of articles on American families that rely on the federal food stamp program. GalleyCat Author Donna Tartt won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her book The Goldfinch. The novel about an orphan also won Amazon’s Best Books of the Month “Spotlight Pick” in October 2013 and was shortlisted for 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award.

Rich Ross Out as Disney Studio Chairman

Rich Ross is out as chairman of Walt Disney Studios following last month’s flop of box office bust John Carter.

“I no longer believe that the Chairman role is the right professional fit for me,” Ross told his staff via email Friday. “The best people need to be in the right jobs, in roles they are passionate about, doing work that leverages the full range of their abilities. It’s one of the leadership lessons I’ve learned during my career, and it’s something I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to as I look at the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Ross joined the Disney family in 1996 as a programming and production executive for the Disney Channel and was eventually promoted to president in 2004. In 2009, Ross was hired as Disney Studio chairman, despite any prior film experience.

“For more than a decade, Rich Ross’ creative instincts, business acumen and personal integrity have driven results in key businesses for Disney. … I appreciate his countless contributions throughout his entire career at Disney and expect he will have tremendous success in whatever he chooses to do next,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement.

Paramount Pictures Hires Executive Nic Crawley

Walt Disney Studios executive Nic Crawley has left his position as senior vice president of international marketing for a new job at Paramount Pictures.

Crawley was hired as as president of international marketing for Paramount, effective immediately.

“We could not be happier about Nic joining our team,” Paramount’s chief marketing officer Josh Greenstein said in a statement. “Nic has incredible passion, talent, and experience. His depth of knowledge of the international marketplace will be a great asset for our diverse slate of films moving forward.”

The hire marks a reunion of sorts for Crawley and former Disney executive Anthony Marcoly, who was hired as the head of Paramount Pictures International in October.

Hyperfactory Gets Some Mouse Money

Hyperfactory, the mobile marketing company, is getting a boatload of cash from former president of Walt Disney Studios and Paramount Television Group Rich Frank (not to be confused with Frank Rich, who, we’re guessing, doesn’t keep cash by the boatloads).

No one is saying how much money Frank is giving Hyperfactory, but it’s apparently enough to help the company launch an entertainment division aimed at record labels and film and TV studios, according to Online Media Daily.

“This is a strategic move on our part as an indicator of one of the new areas we’re going into, and where we see the [mobile] space headed,” says Hyperfactory CEO Derek Handley. Previously, the company worked indirectly with entertainment brands and talent via Madison Avenue; now it will now seek to partner directly with Hollywood.

So, if you get in a car wreck because some jackass couldn’t take his eyes off the Hoobastank video on his iPhone, you know whom to blame.
