Bonnie Fuller Talks Digital Media, Celebrity Journalism and Her First Big Break

bonnie-fuller_149Bonnie Fuller, the veteran editor who has reinvented many major women’s mags, from Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan to Glamour and Us Weekly, is the founding president and editor-in-chief of the entertainment-news site HollywoodLife.com.

In the latest installment of Mediabistro’s So What Do You Do – our first interview in the “Digital Media” week of our Profit From Your Passion series – Fuller talks about transforming tabloids and handling the criticism about her career, and offers advice to aspiring celeb journos:

[You must] have digital skills because I think the world is only going to go more digital and more mobile. So if you want to have a long career in this business, you have to be prepared to have those skills. The second thing would be that every rule used in normal journalism should be applied to celebrity journalism. Just because you’re dealing with celebrities and news about celebrities doesn’t mean you don’t apply a high standard.

YouBeautyYouBeauty.com is not your average beauty website. Yes, you’ll hear about the latest mascara, but you’ll also read about scientific studies and take quizzes straight from universities and research institutions.

New York Post Unveils New Website

 

We’ve been hearing about The New York Post revamping its website for a couple months, and now it’s here. Late last night the Post made the change, and we have to say, it was worth the wait. The new site is a welcome upgrade from the previous version.

While the old nypost.com was so cluttered reading it would give you a headache, this version is much cleaner. It’s also easier to navigate, as sections are clearly marked. The font used in the body of articles has also been enhanced. Photos get their own shiny new section, titled “Postography,” that allows you to scroll through each large, high resolution image of b-list celebrities engaging in b-list behaviors.

Check out the new nypost.com at some point today, we’re sure you’ll agree with us that it’s a step up.

Patch Launches A More Social, More Mobile Site

In recent months, there’s been much talk of the booming New York tech scene. The city has the fastest growing tech sector in the nation, helped along by Mayor Bloomberg’s pitch to entrepreneurs and his Made in NY Digital Map. In Q2 of 2012, Internet accounted for 82 percent of VC investment, and total VC funding continues to rise.

One of NYC’s tech properties, Patch, is unveiling a new site today. I got a preview of the new site at Patch’s Chelsea offices, which puts heavy emphasis on social and mobile. Read more
