A Huge Black Eye for Rolling Stone Magazine

PhiKappaPsiUVAIt’s every magazine editor’s worst nightmare. One that, per a Note to Readers posted today at the top of the November 19 Rolling Stone article heard around the U.S. college campus world (“A Rape on Campus”), has become a sad reality for managing editor Will Dana.

From the Note:

Because of the sensitive nature of Jackie’s story, we decided to honor her request not to contact the man she claimed orchestrated the attack on her, nor any of the men she claimed participated in the attack, for fear of retaliation against her. In the months Sabrina Rubin Erdely spent reporting the story, Jackie neither said nor did anything that made her, or Rolling Stone‘s editors and fact-checkers, question Jackie’s credibility.

Michael Hastings to Receive Norman Mailer Award

Michael Hastings, the journalist who died earlier this year, will be among those honored by the Norman Mailer Center. Hastings will be issued the Norman Mailer Award for Emerging Journalist, Maya Angelou for Lifetime Achievement, and Junot Diaz for Distinguished Writing.

Presenters include Will Dana, Samuel Delaney and Robert Loomis.

The gala will be held Thursday, October 17, at the New York Public Library on Fifth and 42nd street.

ASME Luncheon: “35 Ways To Win A National Magazine Award”

ellies.jpgThe American Society of Magazine Editors is gearing up for submissions to its 2010 National Magazine Awards. For the first time ever, the awards will include a separate ceremony for digital media, which last year included four categories. This year, they have been expanded into 12 different awards, including blogging and podcasting.

This afternoon at The Princeton Club, members of ASME gathered to hear Will Dana of Rolling Stone, Peggy Northrop of Reader’s Digest, and John Rasmus of <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/National-Geographic-Adventure-profile.html"National Geographic Adventure give their opinions to moderator Cindi Leive of Glamour on what it takes to win both the digital and traditional awards, arguably the most prestigious in the industry. All three of the panelists have both judged and won previous magazine awards.
