98.7 KISS FM to Broadcast Whitney Houston Funeral

It’s been a whirlwind week for fans of Whitney Houston. The legendary performer died Saturday night. She was 48.

Houston’s Saturday afternoon funeral is even more bittersweet because it’s being held at her hometown Newark, New Jersey church, where she got started singing in the choir.

The funeral is private, but WKRS/98.7 KISS FM is taking the unprecedented step to broadcast it live from the New Hope Baptist Church, beginning at noon.

Jay Dixon, WRKS program director, said in a statement, “We’re providing this service to our community and for her fans that are unable to attend, but want to celebrate her [life]. We are thankful for the honor.”

Tom Joyner Broadcasts from Harlem, Marking Ten Years of Health Awareness Campaign

For a decade, nationally syndicated morning show host Tom Joyner has been urging people to be more proactive with their health. This year, Joyner’s campaign “Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day” brings him to New York for a live broadcast from Harlem.

On Friday, September 30, Joyner and his morning crew will appear at the YMCA Jackie Robinson Youth Center on 135th Street.

Joyner and the entire Kiss FM/WRKS family will be on hand to provide a day of free health screenings, fitness demonstrations, workout challenges, health information and much more. “Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day” is targeted to raise health awareness in the African-American community.

Joyner, in 2002, with help from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services administration launched this initiative. The national campaign continues to evolve and assist in helping to better educate people nationwide on taking a stand for their health.

Tom Joyner Returns to Mornings on Kiss FM/WRKS

From 2001 to 2003, the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show aired on Emmis-owned WRKS/Kiss FM.

But, after being dropped in favor of building a local presence in the morning, Joyner (far right) and company are returning to 98.7 Kiss FM.

Starting on February 7, Joyner, along with J. Anthony Brown, and Sybil Wilkes will be heard on Kiss from 6 to 10 a.m.

This time around, though, Joyner’s show will include Bob Slade, the veteran WRKS news director, as part of the on-air team.

Since comedian D.L. Hughley was dropped from his morning duties last August, Emmis management was left to ponder their next move.

“I am excited to welcome Tom Joyner to the KISS family,” Jill Strada, WRKS program director, says, ”Tom’s a radio veteran whose work ethic and dedication to empowering the Black community is a perfect fit with KISS FM’s culture. Together we are going to do some BIG things in the big apple.”
