Associated Press Retracts Erroneous Report About Terry McAuliffe (TheWrap)
The AP made a major error on Wednesday in a report that accused Terry McAuliffe, a Democratic candidate in Virginia’s gubernatorial race, of lying to a postal inspector during an investigation into an insurance scam. The Atlantic Wire The story, which is still up on some websites with an accompanying disclaimer, claimed that “Terry McAuliffe lied to a federal official investigating a Rhode Island estate planner now imprisoned for receiving death benefits on annuities secured on terminally ill people without their knowledge.” The mistake in the AP’s reporting comes from misidentifying a suspect referred to by the initials T.M. NY Magazine / Daily Intelligencer The initial report, from AP political writer Bob Lewis, cited a 2011 indictment against a man named Joseph Caramadre as the man who figured out a way to reap the benefits of death annuities on strangers. McAuliffe’s name really did appear on a list of Camaradere’s investors. But the significant detail that he was accused of lying to investigators about it was a mistake. Politico The AP issued a rare withdrawal notice for the story at 11:25 p.m. — a major blow to an organization that distributes news to member organizations worldwide, many of which post alerts and stories to the Web almost instantaneously, potentially prolonging the lifespan of any error. Poynter / MediaWire On Twitter Lewis said the mistake was his: “The error was mine and I take responsibility for it.”

Speculation Swirls Around Nikki Finke’s Future at Deadline Hollywood (LA Times)
Deadline Hollywood founder Nikki Finke is famous for breaking news on the entertainment industry. But on Sunday night the hot Hollywood gossip was being reported not by her but about her. Speculation about Finke’s future at Deadline Hollywood heated up after rival online publication TheWrap reported that Finke was dismissed from her position after clashing with Jay Penske, the chief executive of Penske Media Corp., or PMC, which owns Deadline Hollywood. Deadline Hollywood Here is an official response just sent internally: “This is a complete fabrication, with not an ounce of truth to it. Just to be clear, Nikki Finke has a multi-year contract with the company, and it is the company’s absolute intention to continue its obligations under the agreement. It is sad when a rival business feels the need to fabricate stories to create traffic and notoriety. Due to the defamatory and disparaging nature of some of the completely inaccurate statements made by Waxman, PMC has turned this matter over to our attorneys.” TheWrap / WaxWord Penske emailed TheWrap to say: “Sharon, your story isn’t true and all of the “facts” that you mention are completely erroneous.” When asked repeatedly if Finke was in fact leaving Deadline, he did not respond. Finke did not return an email or call seeking comment. BuzzFeed Let’s assume, though, that it’s the beginning of the end for Nikki’s Deadline. Penske isn’t going to stop owning Variety — reportedly the most recent cause of their friction, since he’s shut her out of having anything to do with it — and I’ve heard from multiple people that her contract is up soon. (TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman reported that it expires next year.) Penske knew he bought crazy, but he may just be sick of it at this point. FishbowlLA Waxman’s report has shot “Nikki Finke” onto Twitter’s Los Angeles Trends chart. All we know for sure right now is that the Deadline doyenne’s current contract ends in 2014. Anything else, including the idea that a removal or exit of Finke is a prelude to Penske folding Deadline into Variety, is pure speculation. Read more

Former Ms. Magazine Editor Mary Thom Dead at 68 (AP / Huffington Post)
Prominent feminist Mary Thom, a writer and former editor of Ms. magazine who also was an avid motorcyclist, crashed while riding on a highway and was killed, her nephew said Saturday. She was 68. NYT Thom joined Ms. magazine in 1972 as an editor, rising to become executive editor in 1990. She was known as a journalistic virtuoso who shaped the writing of many of the feminist movement’s luminaries, including Gloria Steinem.  Ms. “We who are Mary’s friends and family haven’t absorbed her loss yet; it’s too sudden,” said Women’s Media Center co-founders Robin Morgan, Gloria Steinem and Jane Fonda in a statement over the weekend. “Ms. magazine, the Women’s Media Center, the women’s movement and American journalism have suffered an enormous blow. Mary was and will always be our moral compass and steady heart.” FishbowlNY Thom lived for decades in New York City and served as an editor for Ms. for nearly 20 years before leaving the feminist magazine in 1992. The glossy, which began as an insert in New York magazine, became a feminist powerhouse read in the 1970s but struggled to leverage commercial success with its ideological voice. Read more

Glenn Beck’s Website Asks LA Times: What About the Obama Secret Videotape?

Before joining theblaze.com as Middle East correspondent, Sharona Schwartz was a coverage editor for CNN’s Washington, D.C. bureau and a scriptwriter for Wolf Blitzer. With credentials like those, it’s no wonder her post today about a certain Obama recording is so solidly put together.

Schwartz starts off by culling renewed questioning, in the wake of the Mitt Romney/Mother Jones bombshell, of the LA Times’ refusal to release a recording of some controversial 2003 remarks made by Senator Barack Obama at a dinner honoring departing Chicago Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi. She then shares the response theblaze.com received from Nancy Sullivan, vp of communications for the LA Times:

In April 2008, the Los Angeles Times reported first, and in explicit detail about the dinner event and the tape of it. More than six months later, just days before the November 2008 election, the McCain campaign demanded the public release of the tape. As we stated then, the Times did not publish the videotape because it was provided for review by a confidential source who did so on the condition that we not publish the tape itself. The Times keeps its promises to sources and nothing has changed in that regard.
