National Magazine Awards Roundup: New York, National Geographic Among the Big Winners

Last night’s ASME National Magazine Awards had more than a few surprises. The evening began with a cocktail hour for a change, where FishbowlNY had drinks with Graydon Carter, Bethenny Frankel, David Copperfield, and other media celebrities milling around the red carpet. We caught up with a few nominees, such as the editor of Audobon magazine: “We’ve been nominated for 5 years,” he told us, “and we haven’t won once. I wasn’t going to attend, but then I thought, what if we win this year?”

They didn’t. Oh, well! Some other choice quotes: we heard from Bethenny Frankel that she always reads her magazine coverage in nail salons, because she is medicated on planes.

The evening began on a somber note, with Graydon Carter acknowledging the many journalists who had died or been detained while reporting in war areas, and presenting a slideshow of the work of Vanity Fair contributor Tim Hetherington, who died in Misrata, Libya.

But the mood lightened as the awards were announced. Some of the big winners of the night were New York Times Magazine, New York, and National Geographic, each taking home a couple of awards, with National Geographic jubilantly winning “Magazine of the Year.”

Jennifer Rainey Marquez Joins Parade as Senior Editor

Jennifer Rainey Marquez has been hired by Parade as senior editor. Marquez is responsible for managing for all health and medical coverage.

Marquez comes to Parade from O: The Oprah Magazine, where she was senior health editor in charge of conceiving and editing all health coverage. Prior to that, she was senior health editor for Women’s Health and Woman’s Day. She began her career as an editorial assistant at Mademoiselle.   

“Jennifer comes to us with an impressive wealth of experience in the field, along with an innate interest in the health issues that are most relevant to our 70 million weekly readers, ” says editorial director Maggie Murphy.  “We’re thrilled to have her on board.”

Marquez is a member of the Association of Health Care Journalists and a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia.

Michele Promaulayko Moves To VP/Editor-In-Chief Of Women’s Health

After serving two years as Women’s Health’s editor-in-chief, Michele Promaulayko has had the VP tag added to her title.  In this new dual role, Promaulayko will oversee the Women’s Health brand including the print edition, website, iPhone apps, books, and international publications.  Men’s Health SVP/editor-in-chief and Women’s Health editorial director David Zinczenko spoke glowingly of Promaulayko’s contributions to the magazine.

Since coming in to take over Women’s Health, Michele has helped to clearly define the mission of the magazine.  She not only built Women’s Health into the perfect partner to Men’s Health, but also has provided Rodale with a powerful one-two punch in the market.

Promaulayko guided Women’s Health to a 10 percent rise in single copy sales in the first half of 2010 and a 7 percent circulation boost in the same period.  She also was at the helm when Women’s Health was named 2009′s “Magazine of the Year” by Advertising Age and ranked second on the 2010 Adweek Hot List.

Prior to joining Women’s Health, Promaulayko served as executive editor of Cosmopolitan for nearly a decade.  She also was one of Teen People’s original editors and wrote several health-themed books including Look Better Naked: The 6-Week Plan To Your Leanest, Hottest, Body — Ever.

Meredith Corporation Looks To Gain More Titles

In an interview with CNBC.com, Steve Lacy, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, said that within a year he expects to add several magazines, and specifically named Rodale’s Men’s Health and Women’s Health as titles Meredith was interested in acquiring. Lacy says that consolidating publications is vital, because the bigger the magazine the larger the advertisers will be.

Obviously the executives at Rodale know what Lacy knows, so we don’t see them giving up two of their most popular publications without a fight. We here at FishbowlNY see it going down much like the process of reading a Men’s Health or Women’s Health.

First there’s the bold proclamation of improving yourself (we’re going to take those from Rodale!), followed by the intense studying of a workout regimen (these numbers say we should get more magazines!), then a few tentative steps to show everyone you meant what you said (we’ve inquired about those titles, just in case), followed lastly by the decision to abandon the whole plan because sitting on your couch and eating Snickers is more fun than exercising (uh, maybe keeping our own magazines afloat in this climate is enough work for now).

No Hope For Newsstand Sales?

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, as quoted in The New York Times today, newsstand sales for magazines dropped 9.1 percent last year, with overall subscriptions 2.23 percent. Popular individual titles fell anywhere from 41 percent (W magazine) to 30 percent (Good Housekeeping).

But this isn’t all bad news: the titles that have done well in the past year, that have actually seen increases, are niche titles like Off-Road Adventures, which saw a 483 percent increase in circulation, and Rodale titles like Men’s and Women’s Health. One reason for this is that these types of print publications cater to a specific die-hard fan that may not be as willing to trade on free content.

Rodale Promotes Across The Board

rodale1111.jpgBig day for Rodale, publisher of Men’s Health and Women’s Health. Allison Hobson Falkenberry, former executive director to Men’s Health has been promoted up to vice president of brand communications for all the Rodale titles, while Allison Keane will be taking the executive director position at both magazines, reporting to Falkenberry. Rodale’s Prevention magazine has also seen some upward mobility today, with Bethridge Toovell taking on the role of director of communications, and Lauren Paul has moved up to communications manager.

Self Hires Digital Director

selfmag.jpgThis week being the first week of the New Year, the hiring news sets the stage for things to come. And so far this year, we’ve seen publications’ Web sites Newsweek.com and RealSimple.com create new positions to head up their digital efforts. Could this be a trend for 2010?

Today, we have news of yet another digital appointment: Self has named Kristen Schultz Dollard digital director of the magazine, where she’ll oversee the Self.com team and any integrated digital and online editorial partnerships and promotions.

Dollard joins the Condé Nast fitness title from Rodale, where she served as digital editorial director for Rodale International. She has previously works as the editor of iyogalife.com and YogaLife magazine, and helped launch Womens’ Health magazine. She’s also a certified yoga instructor and co-authored the upcoming book The Yoga Body Diet.

Prevention Names Pilates Expert Fitness Editor

B00005NIOO.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpgHere’s some early holiday cheer for the magazine industry: Rodale Inc., which holds such fitness titles as Men’s Health, Runner’s World and Bicycling magazine, has just hired one of its freelance contributors as fitness editor for Prevention magazine.

Jessica Cassity has recently worked as a freelance fitness writer for The New York Times, Fitness, Self, Shape and Weight Watchers, as well as Prevention. Previously, she was a contributing editor at Health magazine.

Cassity also co-created the Pilates instructor Web site www.pilates-pro.com and worked as Soho community leader for Lululemon, where she managed the apparel company’s community-based programs like free yoga in Bryant Park.

CNN’s iPhone App Debacle Raises Questions About Embargoes

cnnmobile101.pngCNN launched a new $1.99 iPhone app today.

That, in itself, might be some pretty interesting news, what with a cable news channel charging for an application that is similar to what other news organizations are giving out for free. The idea raises questions about the future of paid content: Is there an audience for this? Will people buy it? Who will launch the next paid app?

But beyond that, this announcement has been clouded by other journalistic questions, namely the use of embargoes and their necessity. Our sister blog PRNewser reports that Reuters reporter Robert MacMillan was upset by the fact that a rival reporter at Associated Press member paper The OC Register broke an embargo that would have kept CNN’s announcement under wraps until midnight.

“PS, we were going to hold this until midnight because it was embargoed,” MacMillan wrote. “That embargo has been broken, so bombs away.”

Should CNN have embargoed this news? As news of the embargo break hit Twitter last night, Silicon Alley Insider editor Dan Frommer noted how unremarkable this sort of announcement had become. “‘Company X has an iPhone app’ is the new ‘Company X has a website,’ he said.

All Things Digital columnist Peter Kafka agreed, advising his fellow reporters to stop accepting embargoes for iPhone apps.

Do you think he’s right? There are thousands of apps with new ones, paid and unpaid, announced by media companies every day. Just yesterday, the AP launched one of its own, charging $28.99 for access to its 2009 Stylebook. And today, another release arrived in our inbox announcing the second iPhone app created by Rodale‘s Women’s Health magazine, a free app called “Your Slim-Down Shopping List.”

Some of these apps are innovative ways to possibly create new revenue streams for struggling companies, but is every little announcement newsworthy? Or better yet, embargo-worthy? What do you think?

PRNewser: Reuters Reporter Upset As AP Breaks CNN iPhone App Embargo

O Hires A Bunch Of New Editors

o mag.jpgO, The Oprah Magazine has announced several new hires, filling out the editorial department under new editor-in-chief Susan Casey.

Among the new hires are former Marie Claire executive editor Lucy Kaylin, who has been named deputy editor; Patrick Mitchell, who is taking the role of design director; former Publishers Weekly editor-in-chief Sara Nelson, who has been named books director; former Prevention senior editor Tyler Graham, who will be health and environment editor and Jennifer Rainey Marquez, formerly of Women’s Health, who will take on the role of senior editor.

“As we prepare for O’s tenth anniversary year in 2010, I couldn’t be more pleased that Lucy, Patrick, Sara, Tyler and Jennifer are joining our team,” said Casey, who joined the magazine earlier this summer. “They all come to the magazine with incredible talent and experience in their respective areas and I’m confident they will be a great asset to O as we move into our next phase of growth.”

O also named Dr. Mehmet Oz a contributing editor. He will write a regular health column for the magazine starting with the October issue. The magazine also said that features director Pat Towers will be retiring this month, although she will continue to work on special projects for the magazine.

And in other Oprah Winfrey news, Sirius XM has announced the launch of Winfrey’s exclusive 24/7 Sirius XM radio station. Starting on Monday, episodes of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will now be broadcast on satellite radio the morning after they air in syndication on TV. The channel will also replay classic “Oprah Show” episodes as well as shows hosted by Gayle King, Dr. Oz, Maya Angelou and sex therapist Dr. Laura Berman.
