Give Your Pitch a Running Start

Sixty-seventy percent of content in Women’s Running is freelance-written, and around a quarter of that comes from queries. Unlike other running mags, this one is more concerned with its community than elite athletes. The mag covers everything from gear and exercise to nutrition and beauty, and strives to “be the go-to resource of information and inspiration for women who run,” said editor-in-chief Jessica Strebor.

Although most nutrition stories are written by registered dietitians and other experts with nutrition degrees, and most training features are generally written by running coaches. Don’t worry if you don’t fit the bill — there’s plenty of space for other freelance features.

Land Lifestyle Bylines At Sister 2 Sister

Initially launched as a newsletter for women in entertainment by industry veteran Jamie Foster Brown, Sister 2 Sister has been breaking stories in black Hollywood since 1988. But it’s the lifestyle half of S2S where freelancers can break in with pitches on tips and trends on food, fitness, style and more.

In fact, the magazine prides itself on educating African-American women 18-49 in all aspects of their lives. And writing for an independent title means you can relax your language a little. “We don’t do stuffy,” said senior editor Ericka Boston. “Our pieces have a conversational tone.” But, just like anywhere else, your grammar and AP Style mastery does matter.

Get details on specific sections to pitch and word counts in How To Pitch: Sister 2 Sister.

If you’re not a member yet, you can register for as little as $55 a year and get access to these articles, discounts on seminars and workshops, and more.

Kate White on Why Cosmopolitan Doesn’t Need a Reality Show

Go almost anywhere on the planet and you’ll likely find Cosmopolitan. We’re talking 58 international editions published in 34 languages and distribution in more than 100 countries around the globe.

And when your title is that recognizable, you can’t just follow the trends of every Thomasina, Diane, or Harriette publication — even if said phenomenon is as culture-defining as reality shows.

“When you’re as big a brand as we are, you’ve gotta be careful because there’s so much more at stake than if you’re just this little brand,” says editor-in-chief Kate White. “You can end up with problems. With reality shows, you don’t have a lot of say and it takes on a life of its own.”

Watch the full video to find out whether Cosmo will ever enter that market and what White hopes men will gain by sneaking peeks at, er, reading the magazine.
