Pew Study: People Tune to YouTube for News

A new study from the Pew Research Center found that YouTube is emerging as a strong force in the news world. While the majority of people still turn on the TV for major events, the report found that because YouTube allows a user to interact with news organizations via video they have shot, its audience is growing.

“There’s a new form of video journalism on this platform,” Amy Mitchell, deputy director for Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, told the AP. “It’s a form in which the relationship between news organizations and citizens is more dynamic and more multiverse than we’ve seen in most other platforms before.”

Other key findings from the study:

AdWeek Celebrates The Best Of The Aughts

We’re only a couple of weeks away from 2010, and that means it’s time for every publication still in existence to start doing a “Best Of The Decade” list like its VH1′s entire programming line-up.

Lists are great because they are fun, subjective, and get people talking. We’ve seen Time magazine take that idea to heart in its recent issue, and today AdWeek has rolled out a slew of decade-spanning “Best Of” lists that are sure to get some media executives primping their feathers…and others grinding their teeth.

As the editors said in their foreword, the winners this year “weren’t all 21-year-old whiz kids,” which is a relief from what we heard a decade ago when talking about Internet branding and marketing. The Media Company of the Decade award was a no-brainer; the title went to Google for its “game-changing, pay-per-click ad model” which “helped pull the left-for-dead online advertising business out of the post-Web 1.0 recession.” Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google also won the Web Entrepreneurs of the Year award.

More of Adweek‘s “Bests” after the jump

Trying To Find A Business Model That Works

Last night’s panel produced by Mediabistro.com and sponsored by Demand Studios focused on finding a business model for news on the Web but — like most panels of its kind — no real conclusions were reached.

The panel was moderated by BusinessWeek columnist Jon Fine, and featured (in photo from left to right) “rogue girl blogger” Maegan Carberry, NYU professor Jay Rosen, Mediaite.com Editor at Large Rachel Sklar and NewJerseyNewsroom.com‘s Matt Romanoski.

Moderator Fine started the panel off with some scary statics — comparing the amount of ad sales money generated by the New York Times versus the Huffington Post. The Times made over $1 billion in ad revenue last year. he said. How can an online media company compete with that?

Some suggestions were tossed around, including asking readers to pay for content. Sklar suggested that media companies should make it easy for readers to purchase access to information, replicating the “buy” button on Amazon.com or iTunes that is connected to saved credit card information. She also suggested charging for “freemium” or extra content, and said she wouldn’t mind paying a few dollars a month to use Twitter, Flickr or YouTube.

“I wouldn’t mind paying for Twitter because they I would own my Tweets if anything ever went wrong,” she said.

Happy Independence Day!

We’re off for the day celebrating the birth of our nation, but we wanted to leave you with something today … just in case you are chained to you desk.

This week, we were lucky enough to see Kansas State University professor and anthropologist Michael Wesch‘s presentation about YouTube and Internet culture at the Personal Democracy Forum. Wesch rose to prominence in the YouTube community thanks to a short video he made in 2007 called “The Machine is Us/ing Us.” While we wait for someone to post a high res version of his presentation from Tuesday, here is a similar presentation Wesch did last year at the Library of Congress. It’s long, but its worth it.

How Much Are Your Social Media Connections Worth?

So you have a huge number of followers on a specific social media platform. Congrats. Now what?

Well, we’ve all been led to believe that followers=money. But is that true? PaidContent‘s Tameka Kee takes a look at what that’s actually worth.

Kee argues that having hundreds of thousands of followers on Twitter isn’t worth any money because it’s not “a proven direct-sales channel.” We agree to some extent, but then again while Barack Obama‘s Twitter account didn’t win him the election, it certainly didn’t hurt and the publicity he got was probably worth millions.

Kee also notes that having a million subscribers on YouTube is worth “tens of thousands of dollars in monthly income” to at least one auteur.

Of course, the key to the whole social media thing is maybe just make something good.

NYT.com: All the News That’s Fit to Livestream?

Anyone curious about what the future of online newpapers might look like need only turn to the NYT.com right now. The homepage is currently running its usual layout of stories, but in lieu of a front page photo is a live feed of Barack Obama announcing his new national security team (Hillary’s official!). Could a NYT online television channel be far off? We imagine that at some point in the near future this is exactly the sort of meshing between TV and newspaper we will see everywhere.
