The Advocate Sends Andrew Harmon to Washington

The Advocate has made another internal promotion. Days after announcing Matthew Breen would be taking over for Jon Barrett as editor-in-chief, the mag is promoting senior editor Andrew Harmon to become its Washington correspondent/news director.

Says Breen of Harmon: “As senior news editor, he worked closely with former Washington correspondent Kerry Eleveld, and there is no question that Andrew is the ideal choice to continue The Advocate’s political and news reporting on the White House and Capitol Hill.”

Press release after the jump.

March 16, 2011 (LOS ANGELES) — The Advocate (www.advocate.com), the world’s leading gay news source, has named Andrew Harmon its new Washington Correspondent/News Director. Harmon will be based in Washington, D.C., reporting on the White House, Congress, and policy issues important to LGBT Americans for the numerous extensions of the Advocate brand.

“Andrew has done excellent political reporting from the West Coast, especially his work on the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ lawsuit, and the antigay Proposition 8 in California and its attendant legal proceedings,” said Matthew Breen, The Advocate’s incoming Editor in Chief. “As senior news editor, he worked closely with former Washington correspondent Kerry Eleveld, and there is no question that Andrew is the ideal choice to continue The Advocate’s political and news reporting on the White House and Capitol Hill.”

As Washington Correspondent/News Director, Harmon will attend the daily White House press briefings, actively gauging the administration’s progress on LGBT issues. Harmon will do additional reporting on hot-button issues from within the Beltway, providing in-depth features and news updates for the Advocate brand.

Throughout his award-winning career, Harmon has covered a wide variety of topics affecting the LGBT community, including politics, entertainment, and business. Harmon most recently served as The Advocate’s senior editor, contributing cover stories and features for the brand’s print, online, and video incarnations.

Prior to joining The Advocate, Harmon served as a west coast editor and business writer in Condé Nast Publications’ Fairchild division. He has written for the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles magazine, Women’s Wear Daily, and the Daily Journal, among other outlets.

Harmon is a 2006 graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. He is also on the board of directors for International Bird Rescue, a California-based environmental group that co-managed the emergency wildlife response in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.
