The alternative weekly of Long Beach is the latest paper to fold. While it’s always sad when a publication goes under, we’re feeling a special ache for The District Weekly. The paper was in many respects a journalist’s fantasy – a group of newspaper employees fed up with mismanagement and layoffs broke out of their cubicles and started their own publication.
It’s been nearly three years since The District launched, and it was well received by the Long Beach community – but not immune to the difficult economic climate. Editor Ellen Griley tells us there’s a possibility of a farewell issue, but that it’s still up in the air.
