The Oregonian Lays Off 37 Employees

oregonian_2.24.10.jpgThe Oregonian laid off 37 employees this morning, mostly from their news department, with other casualties coming from within their accounting, advertising, and circulation departments. Staffers had been made aware last year that lay-off were likely and have been offered severance packages.

President and publisher N. Christian Anderson III noted that “these layoffs are a painful but necessary part of our 2010 budget, which was developed to ensure financial stability for The Oregonian now and in the future.”

The newspaper, like many others, had been experiencing a decline in revenue for some time now.
