Philly: Mr. Gotham Buys A 215 Mag And An Alt-Weekly Editor Tries Comic Books

Alright. We have three major purchases/job changes in Philadelphia to cover today, all of which have to do with the New York media scene. Yeah people, the incestuous world of media hirings connects the scrapple-lovin', Santa Claus-peltin' Philadelphians and the high-falutin' New Yorkers in ways you can't even imagine.

  • Media move 1: Gotham and LA Confidential publisher Jason Binn has purchased Philly Style magazine. The usually-on-mark Keith J. Kelly notes that more than anything else, Binn & Co. just want to go after rival chain Modern Luxury (Angeleo/CS). A lot.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, current owner Dana Spain-Smith decided to sell the mag "because she wishes to devote her time and energy to her pet charity, Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society." Spain-Smith is the scion to a 99 cent store fortune. Really.

Meanwhile, Style is aimed at Philadelphia's Main Line-and-Center City elite: Per Binn, "readers with household incomes of $250,000-plus and $1 million in liquid assets, as well as homes worth $1 million-plus."

  • Media move 2: The editor of well-respected alternative newsweekly Philadelphia City Paper is stepping down in a few weeks... to write an X-Men spinoff for Marvel Comics. Duane Swierczynski was recently named as the writer of Marvel's Cable title and is also planning to return to a well regarded mystery writing career — his newest novel, The Blonde, was just released by St. Martin's Minatour. According to the Philadelphia Daily News, current senior editor Brian Howard is going to be his replacement.

  • Media move 3: Philadelphia Inquirer Image editor (note: Image = the downsized version of the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine in this post-web journalism world) Chris Gray has announced that she's leaving the paper to become USA Today's new Travel editor. Gray has hada long-time yen for travel writing and the USA Today gig seems like it will be up her alley. As of late, USA Today has been bulking up their travel content.
