Travel Content Curator NileGuide Buys Networking Site Localyte

localyte_logo_beta05112010.gifNileGuide, a website that endeavors to sift through readers’ preferences to provide them with optimal travel information, has bought Localyte, a social-media site of sorts that connects travelers with locals in their intended destinations.

The assets acquired include the Localyte website, the community of Localytes contributors, the technology behind the destination recommendations and Localytes rewards, as well as the Localyte iPhone app, Pocket Sherpa.

NileGuide CEO Josh Steinitz told Tnooz that employees at Localyte face a 90-day trial period before NileGuide decides whether to keep them. Localyte users, who currently serve as ersatz travel guides — earning name recognition and publicity for their businesses in the process — will get the chance to become NileGuide experts, who get paid for their efforts. NileGuide also hopes to expand Localyte’s current army of tens of thousands of experts so that they number more than 100,000.
