Video Game Uses Cover of Time in Ads

Bob Dylan wrote “The times they are a-changin’” as an anthem of sorts for the civil rights movement, and over the years that line and song have been used to describe almost everything.

It definitely has been used to depict the magazine industry in the past, and we submit this as further proof that the Dylan line fits: A video game is using Time’s iconic cover in advertisements.

The New York Times reports that Time agreed to let Activision use a mock version of its cover for the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Activision created the cover as a keepsake for those consumers who pre-ordered the game, which arrives in stores in November. The fake Time cover is also being displayed in GameStop stores.

This is the first time the magazine has allowed a company to use its cover to promote a product, but we don’t expect it to be the last. Magazines need to find ways to generate revenue in any way possible, this is just another way to do that.

You never know, maybe those kids buying Call of Duty will see Time in a new light and then become subscribers. That’s us looking on the bright side of things.
