WABC News Director Kenny Plotnik Exiting

It’s the end of an era on Lincoln Square.

News director Kenny Plotnik is leaving WABC/Channel 7. He has held the position since August 2002.

Our sister site TVSpy first reported Plotnik sent an email to staffers where he says in part, “WABC…I have been honored and proud to have led our news department to countless ratings victories and recognition as an example of the highest standards of journalism in the business.”

Channel 7 has been a ratings grabber throughout Plotnik’s tenure. The station just concluded a successful May sweeps, winning virtually all dayparts.

“Kenny bleeds Eyewitness News blue, 24/7,” Veteran WABC anchor Bill Ritter tells FishbowlNY. “His stamp on the newsroom is huge and everlasting – as managing editor, then as assistant news director and, for the last decade, as news director.”

While there is no word on his future plans, Plotnik added in the email that he has decided to look “elsewhere for career challenges.”

Plotnik’s final day is Friday.

“He has been my boss and my friend,” Ritter says. “And I will miss him.”

TVSpy has more details on Plotnik’s decision.
