WCBS/Channel 2 ‘Sweeps’ Competition With Late Newscast

Update: Comments from Peter Dunn

On January 3, veteran anchor Maurice DuBois made the move from mornings to evenings (with the departure of Chris Wragge for The Early Show).

But for WCBS, this was no rearranging of the deck chairs on the Titanic.

DuBois, the consummate pro, appeared to have instant chemistry with his new on-air partner Kristine Johnson.

And now the ratings bear that out.

In the just released February sweeps, FishbowlNY has learned that WCBS has won the 11 p.m. newscast, which DuBois and Johnson c0-anchor.

This marks the first time Channel 2 has won the weeknight late news sweeps race since 1994. That ratings book was influenced by CBS’ coverage of the Winter Olympics in prime time.

“This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the hard work of everyone here at CBS 2, both in front of and behind the cameras,” said Peter Dunn, President, CBS Television Stations, and President and General Manager, WCBS-TV.  “In addition to having a great team of employees, we are fortunate to be backed by the strength of America’s most-watched network and a ton of promotional support from our colleagues at CBS Radio and CBS Outdoor.  This makes for a winning combination that has not only allowed us to reach our goal of being Nunmber 1 in late news, but also helped put us at or near the top of the pack in every other key daypart.”

Throwing out any sweeps periods interwoven with Olympics, and you’d have to go back to November 1991 for the last WCBS victory in late news.
