Seth's Spring Training

Following on the heels of this Vanity Fair article on the Boston Red Sox, it was announced last week that Seth Mnookin is writing this book...and apparently the lucky members of Red Sox discussion site "Sons of Sam Horn" are getting a hefty preview. The site, described by Mnookin in his article as "a catchall site for Red Sox obsessives and stat geeks," has given Mnookin ample opportunity to warm up his pitching arm. At 388 posts since December 2003 and counting, Mnookin is a prolific contributor to the invitation-only site. His posts range from forceful and authoritative:

Wrong. It was June 13 against the Dodgers. A well pitched game, and Pedro entered the 7th nearing 100 pitches with a 4-1 lead. With one out, Encarnacion singled. Pedro struck out Saenz, and then Cora hit the ball to Nomar but he couldn't make the play--prompting booing from the crowd. First and second, two out, Dave Roberts at the plate. He hits a shot to center, it looks like both runs will score since the runners were off at contact, making it a one-run game. But Pokey leaps up so high that on the highlights you can't get the ground and the catch in the same shot. For the next two innings, the crowd continually chanted Pokey's name.

I know this game. I was there. It was amazing.

...to gently encouraging:

Spike, this is an opening Yankees series discussion. Any observations you want to make, any pitch selection decisions you want to discuss, any thing you want to add about anything at all?
We even found ourselves getting choked up during this post:
Thank you, Pokey. Thank you for your big-ass headphones and your lopsided grin. Thanks for causing the Toilet to erupt in "Po-key's bett-er!" chants during CI's spring slump. Thanks for being here, thanks for helping remind me what a wonderful game this can be, thanks for showing Red Sox fans what a truly stunning infield can look like. Thank you, forever.

Gosh, that Mnookin is just a big ol' softy. And that Nomar Garciaparra sure was good on "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place."
