If you’re not old enough to remember New York alternative journalism in the 1960′s and early 70′s, don’t claim to be of age, or just weren’t around the city then, that’s okay.
In celebration of the spirit of the times and an accompanying popular underground newspaper, The East Village Other (EVO), the Local East Village, a New York Times community web site run in collaboration with New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, is publishing essays by former EVO writers and editors as well as those in their sphere. The pieces recall the days—and nights—at the paper as well as life in the iconic neighborhood during its run. Contributors include: Ishmael Reed, Dan Rattiner, Claudia Dreifus, Ed Sanders, and Coca Crystal, among others.
The essays appear in conjunction with the forthcoming “BLOWING MINDS: The East Village Other, the Rise of Underground Comix, and the Alternative Press, 1965-1972,” an exhibition which runs from Feb. 29 – March 16 at the Carter Journalism Institute.
