Zombie Magazines: The Washington Blade Will Resume Publishing

blade_cover_4.26.10.jpgThe Washington Blade, the 40-year-old DC-area gay weekly that folded late last year when parent company Window Media LLC ceased operations, is back!

In February of this year, MediaJobsDaily reported that, although the weekly’s assets may not have amounted to much, there was a chance that it would be incarnated. In fact, many of the paper’s former employees offered $15,000 for its assets, including copyright, trademark, archives, office equipment and office furniture. In the days following Window Media filing for bankruptcy, the paper ran under the name D.C. Agenda.

Now, twenty-five thousand copies of the new Blade — its original name intact — will be made available on newsstands this very Friday. “D.C. Agenda” will remain the title of the paper’s arts and entertainment section.

The Washington Post reports that the Blade‘s editor, Kevin Naff, has had to tweak the paper a bit in order to have it relaunched. In addition to currently renting space out of the Metro D.C. GLBT Community Center until more permanent office space is found, the paper will also debut a thinner look:

A lot of people really have an emotional connection to the Blade, and the outpouring since it closed was overwhelming and was really what led us to carry on. We’ll be a leaner publication and we’ll grow as we can afford to grow, but Friday’s issue, as of now, is 56 pages, which is remarkable considering Agenda launched with eight pages.

Good job and good luck!
