Professional Experience

A health and medical news fanatic, I bring vast experience to the art of understanding and filtering this information for thoughtful readers. I write for physician audiences wherever they are—mobile, Web, and even--gasp!--print. My repertoire includes professional promotional tactics, medical news, speaker series, Web sites, mobile products, banners, and CME activity. A particular strength: my ability to speak to professional and lay audiences with clarity, ease, and succinctness. I have contributed health-related features to the Johns Hopkins White Papers, Barron’s, Ode, and Real Simple. I’ve been a blogger since 2003, primarily in health-related areas, but also covering environmental and conservation issues for a social media site of recreational anglers and hunter with nearly 200,000 Facebook fans. I am constantly searching for writing or editorial projects to which I can bring my fascination and deep experience in these fields to a large professional or consumer audience.

Why a laugh a day keeps the doctor—and the cardiologist and the psychiatrist—away.
This is a series of profiles of award-winners I wrote for The Rheumatologist.
I have a short article about the (possible) health effects of laughter in the February 2011 issue of Yoga Journal.
What should you eat? What's better? Healthier? Butter or margarine? Diet soda or the real thing? You get the idea.
The "nutrition facts" chart can help you make wiser food choices--if you know what to look for.
This article on the treatment of DVT, a potentially fatal condition, appeared in Patient Care, a journal for primary care physicians. (Note that my credit appears at the end of the text.)

This is a reflection about a great summer with my kids, neice, and nephews.
The latest thinking on diagnostic tests to exercise, to life-extending laughter--and chemicals.
How an optimistic outlook can help improve your state of health, not just your state of mind.
Cancer is now the leading cause of death among Americans younger than 65 years. That statement is less alarming than it first appears, because deaths attributable to heart disease dropped dramatically in recent years. In fact, the number of cancer deaths has also fallen during the same period, but less rapidly than heart disease deaths.
Recent studies found that lifestyle changes can dramatically reduce your chances of getting all cancers.
One of several articles I wrote for The Rheumatologist in 2011, this one helps members of this specialty figure out how they may--or may not--fit into accountable care organizations (ACOs). This was a great opportunity to speak with several rheumatologists who are helping their colleagues meet the ACO challenge.
The meat is raised naturally; the packaging is recycled; the ovens use renewable power. New green fast-food chains are serving up burgers and fries to feel good about.
This is a series of three case studies I wrote for myCME and Haymarket Medical and their audience of health care professionals. I was fortunate to work with the great staff at Haymarket, as well as an excellent faculty panel, which included Catherine Liu, MD, lead author of the MRSA practice guidelines recently published by the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
This is just one sample of my work as freelance writer/editor of the News and Views section at CA--A Cancer Journal for Physicians, a publication of the American Cancer Society and John Wiley. Other articles for this department are available in the journal's archives.
