Professional/Personal Overview
I have been a committed general interest journalist since the late 1970s, when I joined the Chicago Journal, an upstart free weekly in South Chicago. Lately, much of my time has been spent on long form pieces on a wide range of subjects: almost anything interests me, even celebrity. Most of my experience has been as both writer and editor throughout Asia, where I lived for two decades and have written about everything from the downing of Korean Airlines flight 007 and Indira Gandhi's assassination to the war for Cambodian independence, the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, the economic rise of Korea and China -- and Japan's fall. I have also worked extensively in the U.S. and Mexico, covering drug wars and immigration. Throughout, I have edited and written business stories for TIME and Newsweek, including in-depth explorations of the auto and media industries and the impact of technology and globalization on society and politics from the U.S. to China.
