Showcase

Sports Writing Samples

A humanizing feature on the new minor league hockey team in Winston-Salem.
Feature on Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler, shortly after the team signed him to a long-term contract. I traveled to spring training in Arizona to work on this piece.
Profile on Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, not the most media-friendly baseball player on the planet. With little to go on, I managed to write a feature about his significance to his new team.

Food/Drink Writing Samples

A feature on a local brewer I pitched to Greensboro Monthly.
An Our State piece that I pitched for October, using the World Series as a hook for this North Carolina peanut producer, which happens to supply most of the Major and Minor League ballparks in the U.S.

Travel Writing Samples

Based on a story I wrote about a farmer's market vendor who sold fresh North Carolina shrimp, I pitched and won an assignment focusing on this small fishing village.
A feature on boutique hotels across North Carolina, highlighting the particular room in which I stayed, key perks and the overall atmosphere of the hotel. This was also my pitch.
