Professional/Personal Overview
A former staff editor and writer at a national, general-interest magazine, with a background in newspapers, I understand the need for rich detail and anecdotes to make a story come alive, whether it's an insight piece, a profile or a longer, narrative story. I have written about religion at Burning Man, the first black Pulitzer Prize-winning woman playwright, actor Jake Gyllenhaal and the need for music education in schools, among many other subjects. I enjoy pursuing my own ideas - usually involving an artist or issue just outside mainstream purview - as well as taking assignments. I approach each story with extensive research and a fresh set of ideas, also considering how it will look on the page; I like coming up with concept pieces or other unique ways to frame a subject. I believe in professionalism and meeting deadlines.
