When Monica Ali's Brick Lane came out a few years ago, the novel alienated many members of the London neighborhood in which it's set, and it looks like a planned film version isn't winning them over, either. The Guardian looks at community protests against the production, with one local activist declaring, "Nobody can come with a camera make a film about that book here." Said charmer also promises that he has throngs of youth ready to blockade the streets or worse if the film company dares to show itself around town, and boasts that he and his neighbors kept Ali from winning the Booker Prize because it was a "despicable insult" against Brick Lane's Bangladeshi community. Ruby Films, meanwhile, notes that most of the other residents don't have a problem with the film, and emphasizes, "The filmmakers... certainly would not have embarked on a project which they thought was in any was racist."
