Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, 1918-2008
Last month’s announcement that HarperPerennial had made arrangements to publish the first complete English-language translation of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn‘s The First Circle took on an extra layer of significance yesterday with the announcement of the author’s death from “either a stroke or heart failure,” according to the earliest reports from the Russian press.
The news is even more poignant when one recalls that one of the delays in bringing this new translation, which restores several chapters not included in a version of the manuscript that had been smuggled out of the Soviet Union and translated into English without the author’s permission in the late ’60s, was the death of Solzhenitsyn’s favorite translator before edits on his rendition had been completed.
