Barnes & Noble Reveals $249 Color Nook

Today Barnes & Noble unveiled $249 Nook Color, an eReader with a 7-inch color touch display and the ability to play video. It will run on the Google Android platform and will ship “on or around November 19th.”

eBookNewser editor Dianna Dilworth reported live from Barnes & Noble special Nook announcement this afternoon–she took the photo embedded below. We updated this post as her dispatches arrived. See the official release here.

The new device will also feature social networking tools: “Nook Friends is a social networking tool that is connected to existing Facebook and Twitter profiles. Readers can lend books to friends and then comment on it in the social network.”

Here’s more about the screen: “Stunning 7 inch VividView™ Color Touchscreen shows more than 16 million colors on the best-in-class IPS** display. Incredibly clear, sharp text and images from an unsurpassed high resolution display at 1024 x 600 delivering 169 pixels per inch (PPI). Reduced glare and optimum brightness for reading indoors or outside. Backlit for eady reading day or night.”

In the earliest opinion we could find, CrunchGear was unimpressed: “The new Nook Color has been revealed, and it’s a 7″ Android tablet with a color LCD touchscreen. Talk about bringing a knife to a knife fight when someone else already brought a gun.”
