Borders CEO wants more razzle-dazzle
With the company based in Ann Arbor, the Detroit Free Press is as close to local coverage as they get. And what business reporter Greta Guest discovered after speaking with newly minted CEO George Jones is that his vision is a little more Hollywood, a lot less old-school.
“If we think of ourselves as more than just selling books or music or movies but as being a provider of information and entertainment, then there are a lot of things we can do,” Jones said in a telephone interview. “I have a ton of ideas of things I can do with the relationships I built over those years in Hollywood that I think I can tap into that could help differentiate us as a company and make us stand out versus our competitors.”
Publishers, so far, are optimistic about Jones’ upcoming tenure and his connections. “I think everyone thinks our biggest challenge is how to get more people interested in reading these fabulous books that are being published,” Association of American Publishers CEO Pat Schroeder said. “We are a nation of technology junkies, and everyone wants things in bits and bytes. We are swimming against the current.”
