After a 300,000-Copy Summer, Finally: Success!
"Debut author David Wroblewski took more than 10 years writing his first novel but now looks destined for overnight success, chosen by influential U.S. talk show host Oprah Winfrey as her latest book club pick." One would've thought that being on the NY Times bestseller list all summer, after being selected for the closest thing to handselling Amazon.com has to offer, not to mention having 300,000 copies in print as of last week, might be considered significant in its own right. Granted, we haven't done the research, nor do we really have the time to, but it seems entirely possible at first impression that Edgar Sawtelle might even have been the most commercially successful debut novel ever tapped for the book club within a year of the publication of the edition selected. Of course, considering who's making that observation, it could very well be wrong—in which case, you'd surely let us know, yes? (None of which, you should understand, is intended to knock the book, which we've already established for ourselves has great opening chapters...) Email This Post |
