Dear American Airlines by Jonathan Miles (writer of the "Shaken and Stirred" cocktails column for The New York Times Styles Section) is a comic novel about a man stranded in O'Hare airport on the way to his estranged daughter's wedding who writes a hilariously scathing letter of complaint to American Airlines that soon transforms into a cri de coeur about all that has gone wrong in his life. I believe we can all relate to that. This book would be a natural tie in to the recent news of American Airlines canceling 500 flights, if it were out now, but we won't see it in stores till June.
I can feel the publicist's pain. There is nothing more frustrating than having an obvious big news tie in to your book, and not being able to capitalize on it because the book hasn't pubbed yet. Though, the way the airline industry is going lately, I'm sure AA will be in the news again soon, as will Miles' book.
