When Bridie Clark signed with Warner Books for her roman-a-clef novel of working at HarperCollins, the buzz was, shall we say, rather limited. Then word got out that Clark had spent her days toiling for Judith Regan, and things perked up a bit, but not so much that people were clamoring to read a publishing equivalent of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, even one that promises to be juicier than the prototype.

Now, of course, it may well be a whole different story, especially since the prepub reviews for BECAUSE SHE CAN - which will land in stores on Abraham Lincoln's birthday - are actually pretty decent. Publishers Weekly says Clark "nails the dark side of the vulgar, spiteful boss archetype," while Booklist declares the novel "devilishly funny", rising above its stock characters on the strength of its humor.

Efforts to reach Clark for her take on Regan & OJ yielded no response, but there's likely a very good reason: she was married to John Loverro only two weeks ago.
